I probably have a few 70's era junkers around that I picked up for cheap... somewhere. Probably less that $15.

I'm seriously considering digging them up from wherever they're hiding, giving them a tuneup, and selling. But, fully tuned, somewhere around $100. And, I know that unless I get a good deal on things like tires, I can easily end up spending more than they're worth tuning (plus time).

I think one of the problems is that there was a complete lack of low-end road bikes from about 1980 to 2010, when MTBs were King of the road, so it is pushing up the value of some of the old junkers. But, yes, 99% of the people dealing with these things can't recognize a good one from a junker, and have no idea how to price them. Hopefully not to many buyers get fooled, but I assume some do.

At least all the chrome looks flashy... not necessarily light, but flashy.

This is not C&V, and I built a Troll up for my wife, so I love the model, but this ad just beggars belief.

Wow, I know rohloff IGH-14 will run a couple grand, but add in the rest of it at a generous ballpark of $1500, and apply a typical CL discount, then up 25% to preemptively counter lowballers, and yeah I guess that adds up to $5250! (if you carry a 1 as a 3 or 4!)

Sometimes one runs into the oddest things when shopping for bikes.

This is located under "Bicycle Frames" in E-Bay.

titanium

Seller is from Bellarus, with zero feedback as a seller, and 11 - 100% Positive feedback as a buyer.

I just can't find anything indicating that hard drives are supposed to be made out of titanium.

And, what does this have to do with bicycle frames anyway?

Some of these have to be typos, one (or two) too many zeros on accident.

This is just funny to me since its so clearly NOT a Schwinn. It says 'HUFFY' right there in both pictures. Even if someone had never ridden a bike before, they wouldn't post this as a Schwinn.
Its been reposted a few times in the last week too, so the seller is taking the time to look at what they posted each time they renew the listing.

People are just really bad at reading words. Maybe the duct tape confused them?

Where did Schwinn manufacturing stop and "farming it out" start?

So many components said "Schwinn Approved" on them. I.E. custom for Schwinn, but did they make them? Especially moving into the later years as they started importing bikes and frames.

Certainly some companies such as Murray made bikes with other labels on them.

But... yes, one would think a seller would pay attention to the label on the bike. A bit harder to tell if it has been repainted, but still it sometimes has the brand embossed somewhere on the frame.

I'm not sure what the steal of the deal is.

Perhaps you should report that one to your local PD and see if they can sort it out.

A joke?

Seeing if someone will actually take the bait?

Meaning he got it for a good price?

Anyway, report it to your Police Department.. and let them unravel the facts.

Perhaps.

This sounds a lot like that London You-Tube video where a person conspicuously "steals" their own bike, (even in front of a police precinct) and nobody notices.

That may only be a $50 bike, but bicycle theft is a BIG PROBLEM everywhere. Even with the low-end bikes.

To say the police are too busy hassling people for petty traffic offences to actually investigate a person admitting a crime? Something is wrong with that picture.

Ok, this ad caught my eye... not as wacky as some... but...

LOOK RARE SMALL FRAME MILWAUKEE BIKE CO. road bike - $450 (Springfield)

This bike is awesome!!!! Small frame fixie...the frame alone is $1000 from Milwaukee bike co.Hand made by a dude with a beard in Milwaukee. Asking $450 which is a steal! Very nice little bike. Please call or text
Ok, so this begs a little fact checking.

It turns out that Milwaukee Bicycle Company is the house brand of Ben's Cycle in Milwaukee. The bikes are made by Waterford Precision Cycles

And, Waterford is owned by Richard Schwinn.

A Conversation with Cycling Icon Richard Schwinn of Waterford Bicycles - Cycling Utah

Now, the owner, Richard Schwinn probably isn't doing a lot of brazing. But....

American Factories | Shinola.com (halfway down the page)

EJ Muller is Waterford's "top brazer", complete with beard.

Now, is that really a Waterford frame? Hopefully. Were the track ends added later?

==============================

Oh, and check out the reflection of the seller in the cabinet

Thinking about it, that bike looked awfully familiar.

https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...l#post18132590

Blue road bike mercier - $550 (springfield)

At least the price is going in the right direction. And, the seller lists the brand of the frame, not the fork (which apparently doesn't match).

It still has the same funky brake setup that was noted earlier.

At the risk of being accused of getting my panties in a bunch over nothing....

....this type of ad saddens me and makes me wonder about the future of this country. What does it say about the mental prowess (or is it laziness or a deliberate attempt to mislead) of someone who can't list the correct name when it's written on LARGE letters on the side of the bike.

These are not typos or minor spelling mistakes. And the examples here are far from isolated.....see them often on my local CL. How do these people function in everyday society? Do they know what a yield or stop sign means? Do they consistently enter the wrong bathroom? What kind of job can you get if you see the word Huffy on a bike and list it as a Schwinn? And I haven't even touched on the grammar atrocities I regularly see. Would you feel comfortable with one of these people working on your gas meter or fixing the brakes (or should I say breaks) on your car?

I know, I know, big deal over nothing. But how do we compete in a global economy when such basic skills are missing? I read somewhere that the fall of Rome began when citizens couldn't read the inscriptions on their monuments (or the name of their bicycle). Are we doomed?

Sorry, rant over.

I'm not sure Schwinn (or any other bicycle company) ever manufactured every single part on a bike (e.g. bearings, spokes, hubs, etc.), especially from the 1950s and later. Before that early Paramount frames were "farmed out" to Wastyn Cycles. In the early '70s some Paramount, Sports Tourer and Super Sport frames were "farmed out" to Pioneer Manufacturing. The first complete bike "farmed out" was the '72 World Traveler, followed a few months later by the World Voyageur.

So many components said "Schwinn Approved" on them. I.E. custom for Schwinn, but did they make them?
"Sprint" and "Schwinn Approved" branding meant that part was made by another company for Schwinn.

Oh my God, those are adorable.

Mid 70's Eddy Merckx bicycles. If you're looking at this then you probably already know how great these bikes are. If I had kids I would love to keep these but I don't even have a girlfriend There is some paint chipping and general dust and dirt from being in storage but overall good condition for being 40 years old. Both need new tubes but they're complete besides that. I haven't been able to find out much about these small frame Merckx except that they were made in France.

Orange 48cm - $375
Blue 39cm- $325

Please email or text at 612 - 8 zero 2 - 2144 with any questions.

These bikes are in Madison right now but I come to Minneapolis every weekend and can deliver.

Thanks!

I believe they made most of heir own frames - except for the Paramount frames - up until the 70s/early 80s. Then they went to Taiwan and helped a frame manufacturer there tool up for more efficient production, turning a small company into a giant company... er... into 'Giant'.

FWIW, I think any Schwinn frame made by a company other than Schwinn is superior to any frame made by Schwinn.
