Campy Shifting Question

I have a late 80's Bianchi with full Chorus group. This bike has the Synchro shifters and is a 7 speed. While on the large crank ring, I am having some difficulty getting the bike to cleanly downshift from the smallest cog (highest gear) to the second largest cog. It tends to skip to the third largest cog. There seems to be a very small window of movement in the shifter to make that downshift cleanly. Sometimes I get it, many times I don't. It is the only shift that has this tendency and single gear upshifting (going the other direction on the freewheel) poses no problem whatsoever. Except for this one problem, the shifting is good and the bike rides very nicely. These Synchro shifters tend to be more like friction when downshifting (moving slightly past the gear and then easing back) while when upshifting they provide more of a clean semi click into gear, although it is nothing like Shimano's indexed downtube shifting. I am wondering if this is an adjustment issue, a freewheel tooth issue, or simply a case of needing to move away from Campy's Synchro shifters to a straight friction setup. The spacing on the freewheel between the cogs seems consistent throughout. Thanks for any info and experience!

How long has it been since you've lubed the cable in the housing near the RD and at the BB guide?
I've found that sometimes a lil lube at these points will clear up some shifting problems...

Synchro & Synchro II had their idiosyncrasies. I switched my Synchro II to friction and don't worry about it anymore.
