Looks like we're getting NAHBS this coming year. Once again Richmond proves its innate superiority to second rate cities like, oh, I dunno, New York city. In addition, I found out this week they're building a velodrome on southside, prolly open next year. Looks like I may have to find some vintage track iron.

What the heck is going on? This used to be about the most bike ignorant city on the planet. Not hating, just ignorant.

You poor folks in all those second rate cities'll just have to visit...

I was hoping for Philly, but I suppose renting space in Philly is a real challenge and quite expensive. So a depressed Southern city makes a lot of sense

I always enjoyed riding my bike in Richmond. My sister went to VCU, so I went there quite often.

Back in the '70s, the rule was that if you ever saw the light when it was green, you didn't have to stop. The annoying part of that was that people didn't go right after the light turned green. Is this still true?

You're right. They could have spent more, and gotten a depressed Northern city like Philly instead

Seriously, it's weird. I've lived and ridden here for years, no interest in bikes in this city whatsoever. Now we've got Slaughterama, multiple new shops, a yearly swap, a velodrome coming in, and NAHBS. It's starting to make my head spin.

You used to be able to ride down to VCU and lock up your bike wherever you wanted... now, good luck finding a spot. It's crazy.

I think the fact that they got anyone at all to show up in Indy was a surprise to a lot of people (or was it just me?). Richmond has the ability to draw from NOVA, although good luck driving down 95 on a Saturday. I suspect that moving the show to Alabama might be a little too ambitious, but Richmond will probably have big crowds. I'm sure it's an under-served market

"On to Richmond!" used to be a popular slogan up here in New England......
My younger brother is carpetbagging in one of Richmond's suburbs. Glen Ellen, Glen Allen, something like that.

Interesting - close enough that I might consider driving in for a few days. I never thought it would have been much of a bike town, but then again my only experience with Richmond was flying in for a meeting in an office park in the suburbs.

I recently took a trip to Philly. There's no shortage of vintage bike cruising around up there. It was heaven. I saw a young lady walking her excellent condition Nishiki Sport, looked like an '88. It looked flawless from about 20' away. I saw a couple of Atala's, several Fujis, Raleighs, Schwinns and steel road bikes that were going too fast to identify.

I'm staying on the side of the line that won! That said, I still feel pride for Skyline Drive.

Some updates/pie in the sky stuff:
They're hoping to get the velodrome up by then to do something there (six day race?) in conjunction with NAHBS.
I'm going to to try to get some programs going at the Visual Arts Center, perhaps a frame builder's talk/demo or, in the best of all worlds, a vintage bike show. I'll be talking with them tomorrow, hopefully I can convince them there's some art in the bicycle.

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

I may actually attend this one. It will be interesting to see a second rate city like Richmond, after only seeing 3rd rate ones like Harrisburg for the past 15+ years.

Hoping to be displaying at this show. I suspect that the big Northern cities are going to miss out on this show because of the costs of moving your stuff from the truck to the floor. There were complaints in Indy that it cost $400 for that. And that's never optional.

Sorry I missed you then. I was at Tech from 76-80, and did ride my c73 Gitane Interclub there, but I don't recall ever going to a shop in B'Burg. A couple of shops in NOVA got my (limited) business while back at home on breaks. Mostly just fixed everything myself.

I've helped with load in/out at the RVA convention center (where I assume the show is gonna be) for the Hand Workshop/VAC craft and design show in the past, and they let you do it yourself, and don't charge you for the privilege. This is a good thing to bring up; I may talk to RABA about doing volunteer stuff at the load in/out if we can.

I've also worked comic book shows in NYC where the convention center workers have to carry everything to your table, for some ridiculous charge.
