High Fist Shin 08-02-09 02:02 PM

Machin Shin was taken from "The Wheel of Time" series of books by author Robert Jordan.

Machin Shin is an Ogre word which means, "Black Wind." My first bike was black and together we were pretty fast, like the wind, so... :D

Except, I'm not so fast anymore unless going downhill. I can still decend like a demon but uphill I'm just about dreadful.

I need to ride more.

John E 08-02-09 02:17 PM

Mine forum name, which I use here and on various VW/Audi forums, is a tribute to my late paternal grandmother, a proper British lady who spent much of her adult life in Hawaii. She really wanted her six grandchildren to call her "Tutu" (Hawaiian for grandmother), but when I was 10, she said almost anything else, except "granny," was acceptable. That triggered a lifelong good-natured joust, in letters and phone calls, between "Johnny" ("Well, he is John E., you know, like his late grandfather.") and his "ever-lovin' Granny."

My avatar and motto are a tribute to my maternal grandfather's clan. Both of my grandfathers were primarily of Scots heritage.

lotek 08-03-09 11:15 AM

Lotek, from the William R Gibson story Necromancer. The loteks are very Low Technology guys.
I originally took on the name when I was active in the Audiophile forums because my system
was very low tech.

Marty

caloso 08-03-09 11:25 AM

I went to Cal (BA, History '89). Our mascot is the Golden Bear. Oso is Spanish for bear.

rhm 08-03-09 11:29 AM

I just use my initials. I know, kinda boring... I just didn't give it much thought.

I don't use my whole name because I don't want all those hits on Google, should someone search for me by name.

My current avatar is a sculpture by Picasso, made of recycled bike parts.

fixedgearinker 08-03-09 11:32 AM

I own a tattoo studio, and have been an artist for quite a while, and I used to ride a fixed gear Giant. Fixed-gear-inker :)

Samwiches 08-03-09 11:34 AM

Splashdown 08-03-09 01:49 PM

I fell into a swamp while paintballing. Worse part is two fold. One, I fell into a swamp while paintballing, and two.... I still got shot after I came up for air.

Cozzetti born in '52

Zaphod Beeblebrox 08-03-09 03:01 PM

I started on this forum under a different name but changed it to something I liked better after I realized how much time I spend here.

I used to play Open Mic nights pretty often at a couple local bars, and I'd always put a few fake names on the list before mine so they'd get announced on the stage and make people laugh a little before I got up to play.

Craven Moorehead always got a chuckle...I just changed the spelling to be more appropriate for the intarwebs.

miamijim 08-03-09 03:21 PM

Self explanatory but I've since moved to Tampa and the mods wont let me change it.

squirtdad 08-03-09 03:29 PM

My son's nickname was the squirt....especially when he was younger (he is an old 11 3/4 now :O) ) I'm a dad....

molarface 08-03-09 03:42 PM

Occupational screen name but frequently gets a chuckle so I keep it.

Mine is probably almost downright geeky.
It's two part.
Amani, came from a name for a "story" I was "writing" in my head when I was young. It's never left me (the name or the story) but I just don't have a lot of talent for writing, so I just don't work on it anymore.
And 576, came literally, from part of a password I use to use. 678576. Stupid simple, but the 576 stuck.
And amani576 (or it's variation Amani576) was used as a password and there was a matching username with it. At one point, they switched and Amani576 became the username.
Amani576 stuck, and I've used it since.
But, I don't use any of these things as passwords anymore.

my first name in local dialect form :p

Antipodes 08-04-09 07:43 AM

I chose mine for the fact that most speakers here are from North America and, being from Australia, I write from basically what is the other side of the world. Those who know me better know that Victoria, BC is my second home, so it kind of makes sense from that point of view too.
Antipodes is also one of the traditional ways in which people from the British Isles refer to Australia and N.Z.

twoducks 08-04-09 07:59 AM

I like ducks and one duck just wasn't enough.

NEWSFLASH: British people don't speak English anymore! ;)

Actually I was somewhat surprised...I've visited Britian, well England really, three times though the last time was more than 20 years ago. I really expected people to sound like a sketch from Monty Python or Benny Hill at least somewhere but everwhere I went people sounded sort of like BBC newscasters. Even in Harrigate. Disapointing really. Like I was missing out on something :D

TOLFAN stands for Tired Of Looking For A Name. It never seems to be taken anyplace. Is my sence of humor realy that off center?

Why do you think that? What is Homestar Runner?

I think that because of the "Burninating!" tag you have under your name.
To those that enjoy Homestar Runner that word comes from a short where one character creates a dragon named Trogdor the Burninator, who goes around burninating things.

That's why I said traditional. I sure wasn't going to use the culturally cringeworthy phrase "down under" to refer to myself.
No, there isn't one Antipodes, it's just a term that means two places diametrically opposite on the surface of the earth. It also means opposite or contrary, which quite often I am with many things.
