Oscuro 08-04-09 10:36 PM

Back when I was young and angsty, I decided, for whatever ridiculous reason, that I wanted "Pure Evil" as a screen name. Obviously, that was already taken, but it wasn't in Portugese...or Italian....or something. So I used Puro Malvalgio, I think. Over the years, it got shortened, twisted, and strangled into Oscuro through some method that I don't remember.

It's now my SN on everything from E-mail to gaming, so I seem to have adopted it for the long term (No, I am not the Oscuro who Modded Oblivion however, just in case anyone here might think that)

cyclotoine 08-05-09 12:20 AM

I joined the forums to seek information on a bike I rescued from the scrap heap. I admit being a budding capitalist I wanted to know what it might be worth and how old it was...

I needed a name on the spot.

My name is Anthony, sometime in junior high there was a french class in which one of the text book characters was called uncle antoine.... Antoine, Antoinette (if you wanted to tease which kids at that age do) and eventually just Toine (which I spelt as Twan all through highschool) stuck. In highschool some people didn't even know my real name anymore nor did half the people I knew during my undergrad (when I signed up)... it's a cycling forum and cyclotoine rolled off the tongue. Anyway, I dropped the nickname when I left everything and everyone I knew behind and moved west... Starting graduate school I felt I must stop introducing myself as "Anthony, but you can call me Toine"... So now most people call me Anthony or Tony.

Sho531 = Sam Howell and 5/31 the day I quit a job that was driving me nuts. I have a Miyata Americana from 1978 that I'm fixing for a commuter.

I guess my parents chose mine.
I've owned and used CB radios for 37 years or so. Way back when, everyone used handles rather than their given names. I went along with this for years, but eventually, I came to the conclusion that was just plain silly.
Not saying screen names on a forum are silly, some folks are legitimately concerned about privacy issues, but I chose to just present myself for who I am.
There are a couple of forums I participate in where I do use a screen name, however,

Mine as well. I use it everywhere! (Except on eBay where I'm "Deluxe64" -- model and year of my VW bus)

My avatar was taken (after asking) from someone on this forum -- can't remember who, but it is in the archives somewhere.

j for James, rest is my last name. Yes, if you dig down far enough, I am related to Hugh Hefner.

Here is my avatar enlarged:

Upper left corner is the front wheel from a steam powered ploughing engine. Upper right is a driving wheel from a 4-4-0 steam locomotive from the 1800s. Lower right is a flywheel from a stationary steam engine, lower left is the paddle wheel from a steamboat.

In the center at the bottom is the smokestack from a steam pumping station (I also own several small steam pumps). In the center is a computer model of duTemple's steam powered airplane I made for Microsoft Flight Simulator, with a high wheel bike superimposed on top of it.

I named it "1875" because all of the above existed during that one year. History does not record what happened to duTemple's monoplane after its one and only flight that year.
