Got me a new ride! Will post pics soon. Daybreak Blue, just like the one in the catalog:

It's been modified since; it is now 8 speed w/ Shimano 600 brifters, derailleurs & brakes. Forte wheels, bar & stem. Bontrager saddle. Blue cork tape.

I will pretty much leave it as is, but will changer the saddle to a Selle Italia Flite; bar tape will be Cinelli Cork in Orange, and if I can find them, I will change the cable housing to orange as well. I also need to find a good deal on some Continental Gatorskins!

Any modification to fit a 8 speed hub?

I have a Miyata 721a also. Looking to upgrade to a Shimano 600 tri color 8 speed. Any problems getting it to fit?

Great looking bike- I love aluminum frames that are either lugged or transition smoothly from tube to tube.
Each looks 10x better than the sloppy industrial gooping the do now with welds.

Funny that the catalog says 21 speeds, yet also claims speeds:14

You have to spread the rear triangle from 126 mm to 130 mm. Some people say that's a non-issue on an aluminum frame; others say it is. I wouldn't worry about a bike that has been modified but I also wouldn't do it to my bike if I had an Al frame; I'd keep it at 126 mm and ride 7 speed.

I have the '89 718a, 6 speed cluster and triple of course. I left it pretty much stock except for a tri saddle, Neuvation wheelset, Ultremo tires and Stryke aero bars. It's a tri trainer, but since I moved I don't have wide, quiet, smooth drags to lay down long pulls in an aero position.

I got a lot of compliments on the color and the flow of the frame. Pretty bike.

Guess i'll stick with the stock setup and just upgrade the shifters. Thanks for the tip
