Pulled over to chat up a man named Scott who special ordered this frame from Ron through Odyssey Bikes in Sausalito in the mid-eighties. A beauty.

Bikes: Yes, Please.

Getting there

Weird how "issues" play out. 39 years after I had to quit racing, my old Cooper is almost back on the road.

So, I have a 1974 Custom built Ron Cooper Criterium/Time trials bike that was built for me. 22 inch frame 39 1/4" wheelbase. Full campy Nuevo Record, all original. The bike is in excellent condition. I'd like to sell it. Any idea what it's worth? Any suggestions where to sell? Serial # on bottom bracket is 236.

This was my lucky find this week. A third picture will follow soon, but unlike anyone's pics I've seen so far, it has a simple RC decal on the front.

Bikes: 34 frames + 80 wheels

I last posted my Ron Cooper on 7/1/2013 (see post number 163). Here are some photos as it looks today.

https://m.imgur.com/a/RsKs0

The main change is to the wheelset. I've replaced the wheels with Campy Nuovo Record high flange hubs and Mavic GL330 dark grey anodized rims with wheels with Campy Nuovo Record low flange hubs and Ambrosio Montreal Medaille d'Or silver polished rims. The old Italian Vittoria tubies have been replaced with newer Italian Veloflex tubies. The frame pump is a Zefal hpX, which is the best frame pump ever made.

Indeed, you may have seen this bike before. I purchased it, and several other C&V bikes, from my friend and neighbor Captain Mike Stenger, a USCG Aviator in Port Angeles, Washington a few months before he passed in the spring of 2017. I rode his Cooper in the 2017 Eroica California event where I proudly wore the t-shirt pictured below.

Hey Cooper dudes. I have a line on an early Cooper and I have a couple questions.

- What makes one Ron Cooper bike more desirable/valuable than another?
- What's the average going rate for a bike on the rougher side?
- Anything I should look out for, good or bad, when looking over the bike? (Aside from the normal stuff like stuck post/stem?)

Ron was a one-man shop and he lavished care on all of his frames. Therefore, condition and whether the bike fits you or not are the main determinants of desirability/value. Price depends a lot on location. Here in the SF area I've seen immaculate examples go for a bit over $1,000 and mediocre ones go for around $500. However, bear in mind that prices are high here compared to much of the rest of the country.

It's awful, except for one thing... It's a Cooper, and in my size!

I posted a pic from my phone but it didn't keep.
The good thing about it being awful, anything I do is an improvement. But no worries, I revere his frames, and will not be cavilier in my restoration.
It was waiting when I got home from picking this up. What a day!!!

As rough as it is, I do not think I'm going to repaint it. I think just getting the nasty modern bits off, and cleaning. It was a one family bike, and I think that's pretty cool. 1973 with unusual crank choice. I think it may have been built from bare frame. The original owner passed a few years ago, and was being used by his daughter (in her late 30's) as an around town bike.

Just got a Ron Cooper bike a few weeks ago. Serial #438 , think it's about 1973. Sending it out to get re-painted. Still trying how to add picture.

I doubt that it was made in 1973. I bought my Ron Cooper frameset in May, 1976, and its serial number is 231.

I'm guessing on date. 73 was on the rear derailleur. I took it to Ed Litton for painting and he thinks mid 70's is close.
