thanks for all the info guys. dont worry, i put the stem down and fixed the seat right after i took those pics..
needed an authentic "before" shot of course (=
i did my commute on it today, about 20kms. really nice and light, actually shifting ok even with that silver crap all over everything.
it might be a tad big for me, it's a 58cm and i'm about 5'9.. should i pass on the silver beauty?

unbelievable! some guys (who spray paint classics!) don't deserve a nice bike.

I see lots of potential karma for you, rudeness. I'm curious to see what shade the original finish was - and no matter what it is, it'll be 100 times better then that silver spray job.
I cringe - considerably - every time I pass that photo of the black anodized NR headset with silver paint overspray

Now that I think about it. this is the same think that happened to that really nice windsor I got. not sure what age mine was but the rim liners where fabric so it's older.

I'm having trouble breathing after seeing those pictures. What a travesty.

You are in Montreal anyways, why not take the frame/fork into Mr. Marinoni himself and have them do it for you. They quoted me $180 for a custom paint job that included decals and they would strip all the old paint off before they painted.
It is an excellent bike and I assume it fits you so $180 is not that much to invest into a bicycle that will last a lifetime...

Wow, the idiot didn't realize the headset was a seperate part, so he sprayed right over it!? Tullio is rolling over in his grave! Should be a great bike when you get the paint sorted out. The components should come out like-new when soaked in mineral spirits, etc. Good luck!

The problem is that you don;t really know what tye of paints you're dealing with. If you can, you want to find a solvent that dissolves the silver paint and leaves the original paint intact.
So, you might remove one of the anodized parts with paint and try different solvents. After you determine which solvent will remove the silver paint, you can try it on an inconspicuous location (like to BB shell) to determine of it will also remove the original paint. For example, if mineral spirits removes the silver paint, clean the underside of the BB of the silver paint. Then put a little mineral spirits on a rag and rub the original paint with the rag. If you get the original paint color on the rag, stop and try something else.
You might also try really fine (2000 grit) wet/dry sandpaper that is soaked in soapy water. That would take a while, but it might work.
Also detailer's clay (aka overspray clay) is even less abrasive and leaves a very smooth surface.
Good luck. It is a shame to see that careless paint job on a nice bike.

so far varsol (paint thinner) and a green scrub pad is working pretty well.. It's going to take a while, but i can get down to the pink and i don't see any pink coming off.. just that nasty silver
I tried to check out the columbus sticker but went right through it.. decals are definitely over the clear coat

Yes, good work! A Marinoni repaint sounds like a heck of a deal, keep that in your back pocket as a great plan B.
That brake looks very good

now that i can see it, most of the gipiemme stuff is "crono sprint" : brake calipers (w/ original pads) , crank, headset, bb
back wheel is "fir" EA60 with unmarked hub and front wheel is "nisi mixer" rim w/ sachs maillard "new success" sealed hub (newer than the bike?)

talked to Marinoni, it's $170 for a 1 colour paint job with decals. They still have the 1990 decals
Extra $90 to disassemble and re-assemble the bike. So yeah, that will be my plan B

That Gipiemme brake looks like some nice stuff. Those vintage side-pulls can be great both functionally and visually. And $170 with decals? I know what I'd do - in a heartbeat.
