I couldn't help myself
So there I was minding my own business, heading to the store to try to find some PB Blaster for my hi-ten Kenko storm and this caught my eye.

A 64cm frame like my kenko, but much lighter and without a stuck seat post (AND IT HAS WHEELS). It's also sporting nearly identical components, so the hi-10 kenko just became a parts doner.
I couldn't help myself, I probably paid too much.

Bikes: Was Fuji and got my grails (Pro, Pro SR, Design Series, & Ti). Now I hunt 50's/60's road bikes.
Nice find. Mind telling me what pump that is? I've been looking for one to fit the pegs on mine for quite some time.
Don't feel bad about spending too much. I doubt that you spent all that much on it. They are surprisingly nice bikes. I have higher end Fuji's, but the SRR is the one I ride the most.

Very cool, love the decals. That is an interesting way to mount the rear derailleur claw
. I like the look of those Suntour V-GT derailleurs, they are massive and mechanical looking. They funtion well too. Those Suntour thumbies are neat, do they have a racheting action?

The pump is a 'Number 1 Pump' made by the Dahltron Corporation, consisting of mostly plastic, unfortunately I believe it is broken as it didn't pump up the tire at all.
I paid a massive $60.00 for the bike in As-Is shape. Given the number of 64cm frames I usually happen across, I think I did ok. Now the question is to paint it, or to keep it in its glorious yellow? I do really like the high-flange hubs... hubba hubba indeed

keep the yellow, it looks like it's in great shape. A bit of mequires scratch X will make it gleam.

Yes, it seems in too good of shape to go messing with the paint other than touching it up.
Any suggestions for how to trick it out? I know it's not a necessity, but I've always wanted an eye-catching bike. It's not a commuter, so theft is not such of an issue.

Bikes: Upright and Recumbent....too many to list, mostly Vintage.
Looks very much like a '73 but the serial number will tell all.
This model is aka the "S10-S"

Are you looking to keep it as a sit-up-and-beg seating position or do you want to change it back to drops?

I'm torn, but thinking of putting it back to drops, or perhaps mustache bars. I do have some wide drops on a schwinn sprint that would fit my size, but they are chrome and I think ill-suited for this bike. I have some aluminum saki(sp?) champion drops from the kenko but they are an inch narrower than the schwinn drops. I think it'd be a good vintage pick for the shorter rides with the local bike club. I'm a big guy though and I'm currently searching the internet for some beefy rims like the velocity Deep V in 27" size. I suppose I could convert it over to 700c, but I don't want to.

Haha, I miss the Kalamazoo area. I knew where all the bikes were there. I can't quite tell from the pictures, but if you're considering mustache bars, the bars on there right now might look good flipped.

Jim,
Nice catch. I've ridden by that guy's yard many times, always stopped, but never found anything I wanted.
By the way, this summer there was a club rider who was on an SRR that he bought brand new back in the mid 70's. Here is a pic of his that I took with my cell phone.

Nice and NICE! I think I'm going to have to put my brooks on it. I'm on the lookout for yellow tires in 27", but haven't found them yet except for ebay offerings. Next up, where's the yellow bar tape?
...would it be beyond wrong to put the thumb shifters on the drops?

you like 64cm frames? I just bought a nice black Nishiki Rally frame set the other day. I was gonna build it and flip it, but if you find it interesting drop me a pm. Dunno where you are exactly but it looks like Michigan somewhere, so shipping might be an issue.

I couldn't find them in the REI online site, there is no REI store near me.

I have a set of those thumb shifters. If they are like mine (no reason to think otherwise), they do ratchet. It's the same basic mechanism as the SunTour Command shifters used (and similar to SunTour Power shifters).
Mine have 7/8" clamps on them, and these are probably the same. Most upright bars are 7/8". These would not fit on my 15/16" road drops (which is the normal diameter of road bars) when I tried it. The clamps on SunTour Command shifters will work with those thumb shifters, but of course, if you had those clamps, you'd also have the Command Shifters, and you'd use them (I was using my command shifters on a bike with 7/8" bars for a while, so that's why I know they interchange).
If you want to be "period correct" (and maybe you don't), you'd want to get the period-appropriate DT shifters.
If you want to stay with 7/8" bars, those are decent shifters, though I prefer the feel of the older ST Power thumbs, which have a smoother action because the ratchet mechanism is a little different, and the levers themselves are longer (actually, the exact same levers as the Power DT shifters used). Their clamps were steel, though--heavier, and an uglier design than the ones you have, but nice shifters.
Well, that was 12 cents, where only 2 cents was needed, I guess.
Nice bike!

Well I was riding bikes yesterday just to get out and think about what I'm going to keep in the stable and how I'm going to use the keepers. I aired up the tires on the Fuji Special Road Racer and took it for a spin at 90-psi. The tires were low when I bought it. After tightening down the quick release on the rear wheel, it really smoothed out the ride and became very well behaved. I was amazed at how spirited the ride was. I don't know if it was the alloy rims vs. the steel wheels that I'm used to, or just plain ole Fuji quality, but it propelled me up the incline like nothing. After the ride I think I'll keep the bars how they are because it was fairly comfortable and upright. I couldn't shift the fd and the rd shifting was bad, and the rear brakes are frozen. All this is easily fixable with new cables. I just really liked how responsive the bike was to leaning and cornering. This is going to be a good ride when I'm finished with it. I think it's my 'speedy comfort bike'.
