I think that the AN hub being referred to may actually be the AC or AR. Rarer than gold plated hens teeth. They may be one and the same, too.

My local craigslist has this bike:
https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/hn...442403423.html
I called the seller, and he said it's a Reliant. He has no idea how old it is. The price is right--would that be a good place to start?

I think the Raleigh Reliant is a Taiwan-made bike from the 70's. Not that great, but for $35, you will probably get at least your money's worth. Even if it turns out to be trash, if it has two good tires, you're ahead.
It's a 23" frame, so you should be at least 5'8" to fit on it well.
bikamper, you're quite the Sturmey Archer expert. How do you convert an SA hub into fixed gear? That would be fun and practical.

Those beautiful bikes are TOO nice. I'm planning a project with an older frame - not cleaned-up. Replace a drive train. And it will not look like "Thief Bait". But those are beautiful.
The 3-speed machines are making a BIG comeback. Find those frames and parts! These machines are FUN and Economical!
(And thanks banjo_mole - that shifter is the BEST!)

I adore that Viscount chainring, but it's huge. What size is it?

The chainring is a 52t. I was running a 19t cog when the pic was taken, have since upped to a 20t and a half link. As a warning to others, never ever use a Lambert/Viscount crank on a fixed gear.

As to converting an AW to 2 speed fixed, I wrote up a .pdf on the process. It is a tad big to post on here but I am more than willing to share. The way I do it requires nothing more special than a dremel with cut off wheels and a RA grinder. No milling machine or carbide tools and no hardening of parts except for the special sliding clutch, if you choose to use one. And I don't make those. I can usually turn one around in less than two hours with or without the special clutch needed to eliminate the slop inherent in the design of the hub. If you have ever heard of a 'Cheesy Hub', I'm that 'Cheesy'.
I'm going to try my hand at fixing a Bendix 2 speed manual shift hub soon. My understanding is that it is as close as you can get to a Sturmey TF without having to mortgage something.

Okay, I've tried ten ways from Sunday to post my instructions on converting an AW to two speed fixed gear. I guess it is too large. If someone wants a copy, PM with an email address and I'll get it to you.
