If a person can provide some evidence that a bicycle has been abandoned, is there an authority in either Canadian or American cities that one can appeal to in order to gain possession? Some apparently abandoned bicycles that have appeared in these many pages are just too rich and enviable to end up in some destructive city removal program.

One interesting segue involves something I came across on my last visit "home" to Vancouver in 2017: not far from a friend's downtown shop in a landmark city square was a scruffy, but otherwise very tasty bicycle anchored to a pole. I asked my friend about it because it was there every day for some weeks — apparently unmoved. My friend told be it was a "decoy" bicycle. Bicycle theft had become so rampant that city authorities had staked out some bicycles with electronic devices installed in them. If removed, they could be tracked and perhaps lead to the apprehension of the culprits — chop shop operators and so on. I took this as more than just BS because Mr friend is very up on city affairs.

Not sure of any of this, in PDX nobody would question you much as far as I know.

No official channel to go through either that I know of.

The OP is in Brussels Belgium so who knows.

You could get the S/N and run it through the databases, authorities and otherwise but still no way to make any claim on it I think.

Many places do sweeps and auction unclaimed ones off at some point but it seems epidemic in Europe with mountains of bikes piling up to the point of overrun in places like Amsterdam and Copenhagen. :twitchy:

If the decoy bike was left in one place too long with no hits, it becomes a moot point and waste of time, resources as nobody wants to mess with it one way or the other.

slightly off topic but in Canada you can conduct your own check to see if a bike (or anything else that's serialized) is on file with the Police.

If you search "checking if a bike is stolen" you should find a link to the RCMP website.
You simply enter the serial number (called a PIN or Product Identification Number) and instantly you'll know of its on file. Very useful if you have concerns about sellers....

This one passed me as I got onto 95S on the south side of Fredericksburg VA. Quebec plates. They made a gas stop in Thornburg so I took a pic and plugged BF to the owner. There destination was Florida. Anyway, the bike was sporting Campagnolo Veloce.

Aficionado speaking! You know as well as I do (if you live in a big city) that for any one bicycle advocate 10 deadbeats would bother the authorities for a free bike. Will not happen.

Your friend in Vancouver is correct; they're called bait bikes. https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2019/0...rogram-summer/

Partially stripped bicycles are a sadly common sight in New Orleans post-Mardi Gras, as people forget where they locked up or don't make it back til morning. Most of them aren't as nice as this one though.

I've never heard of this marque. The bike is clearly well-loved, I hope it makes its way home soon!

Nothing super special, but a fun jusxtaposition; a 1994 Trek 930 in front of a Schwinn Continental. Somehow I managed to leave the Trek alone, but it wasn't easy.

Two good things happened on this ride

#1 I got a flat. Right outside a bike shop. Which had just opened. And had exactly the right size tube.

#2 When I got where I was going there was a great excuse to post a pic of one of my bikes:

I’ve seen this Excalibur around San Anselmo too. One year only model (1985) renamed ProCaliber in 1986. Has the steel clamp on chrome-moly Bullmoose bars as speced for the 20 and 21 inch models. The 18 and 19 inch versions came with the aluminum model (that was recalled). When I bought my 1985 Comp I had choice, went with the aluminum which I cut down rather than exchange when they were recalled.

Riding home through town on my mountain bike, I noticed the Campy sidepull brake and the unique orange color. I asked the rider's companion a few lengths back if his friend was on a Colnago. He didn't know, so I caught up and it was indeed a '70s Colnago. Since I had also owned one we talked. His jersey bore the name "Dinosaurs," and I found out he was meeting the annual "Dinosaur Ride" in Fairfax. I went along with him, and there were indeed a lot of old cyclists, many of them acquaintances, from the '70s and '80s. Was pleased to see old (in every sense of the word) friend Nick Farac-Ban, now in his '90s.

The machinery was classic, as one might imagine.

RB-3 riding the NYC subway. I chatted with the young fellow who didn’t seem to know much about it when I admired the build. Maybe his dad built it for him.
