His dad shows him love in the very same way you show your son, with a brilliantly built purpose built bike.

Spotted an old Puch Cavalier mixte beater with Lambert style Pro-5-Vis chainrings. That's pretty much the only special thing about this bike.

Nah, pretty sure that is a clip on light. The red one around the seat tube is the rear one.
Thank you! Does one press on them to turn them on and off? Wondering since see no visible wires or switches. ----- |
I've spotted a couple. What a contrast.

Had to take a pic. Not really for the bike, but to what it's locked to. |
I spotted another steel frame Franklin branded bike on a group ride yesterday and in asking the owner MaryAnn about it, came to find out it's from a local builder near Columbus OH. Snapped a few pics and found some info on the brand through the search feature here on BF. Club buddie Ron & I have started riding with a group of mostly older riders in a neighboring town and it's a good opportunity for me to rotate in some of my steel frame bikes that don't get out as much on faster pace rides. That's my '85 Ironman in the background.

It’s been freshly powder coated and is being built into a single speed with a “flip/flop” hub but isn’t this a PX-10?

Riding home through town on my mountain bike, I noticed the Campy sidepull brake and the unique orange color. I asked the rider's companion a few lengths back if his friend was on a Colnago. He didn't know, so I caught up and it was indeed a '70s Colnago. Since I had also owned one we talked. His jersey bore the name "Dinosaurs," and I found out he was meeting the annual "Dinosaur Ride" in Fairfax. I went along with him, and there were indeed a lot of old cyclists, many of them acquaintances, from the '70s and '80s. Was pleased to see old (in every sense of the word) friend Nick Farac-Ban, now in his '90s.
The machinery was classic, as one might imagine. |
Outside the Surbiton Flyer public house yesterday 5:30pm till late.
Think it was trying the "this isn't the bike you want to steal" vibe. Newish tyres, and enough rust on the steel rims that the brakes probably do work. I've got no idea what date it is, but is that a Campy front hub ? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...4e82714ec6.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...ea1bb237b5.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...0c0be566a4.jpg |

At Pen Ponds cafe in Richmond Park: Fuji Feather track bike
I spotted the large flange hubs and took a closer look, no idea how old it is. Flip rear axle with 2 cogs on it, not sure if they're fixed or not. But Richmond Park doesn't seem like a good place to not have gears. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...2596ebff69.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...39ab1ccb9d.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikefor...a6d6c12775.jpg |
Not particularly high end, but not that common, either.

Genuinely curious - what do you admire about the build? The bar-cons? The baskets? I've biked in NYC myself and would definitely want panniers over baskets or at least a bag to hold things tight. And what about a helmet and a light?
This is a do it all set up like this, rock solid time tested MB-3, drop bars with bar ends, racks, baskets, fenders and legendary Bridgestone quality. ;) |

As @merziac notes, first was the MB3 chassis and the rest of the setup is a sensible urban build depending on ones requirements and taste. My Manhattan commuting rigs started with panniers but evolved to basket and bag for greater convenience and roll-up panniers when I had more cargo to lug. The rider had a pack on the seat next to him, whether he wore it on his back or stashed it in the basket is unknown. I always wear helmets but it's not my place to expect others to do so, and if you're never out at night lights are optional. TBH most of Manhattan is so well-lit you can see just fine. I agree there's an advantage to "be-seen" lights in daylight but in practical terms drivers are almost constantly distracted and regularly crash into very large, well-lit things. I find them more useful around my upstate house than in the city where blinking lights abound.

These two showed up at the last Volunteer Trail Stewards workday. We worked out that that 520 is one of the last years made.
