I noticed on a newly acquired 1983 bike that all the hubs look like they are missing the dust covers. Am I right or did these Sunshine hubs never come with them. All 4 are missing.

So, What can I do to fix this problem. any MacGyver's out there ;-)

Yeah the cover is definitely not there. I'm not sure where you would find replacements, maybe you can find a washer to fit?

How would you want the washer to fit? snug on axel and just bigger then the opening or would you want it to fit inside the pening?

I can sell you a front Suzie hub for the same price as one dust cap from Loose Screws. That way you get two.
I can also check my parts box.

I have kluged dust covers for undersize dust caps by wrapping a strip of cloth between the hub and dropout and securing it with a tie-wrap.

However, that hub looks pretty standard. If you just got some dustcaps or cones or maybe an axle kit from Niagara, the caps just might fit. It may need new cones if it has been ridden for any length of time without the caps.

Find a local bike shop that has been in business for a couple of decades or so. I would say that there is a good chance that they would have some in their parts bins, or some old destroyed wheels hanging around that you might be able to take the dust caps off and pay a nominal fee.

When I was flipping bikes that pile was really handy. Not very easy to pack into a small basement but I always seemed to have the right replacement cone, axle or innertube.

I've even scrounged spokes from spare wheels. It comes in handy.

The first wheel I built has spokes from at least three other wheels. I'm still riding it plenty.

Yeah, I love doing what others say won't work out.

I missed the thread the first time round (in 2009!) but I will say the early 80s Raleigh Record I recently acquired has a replacement front wheel with Sunshine high flange front hub (axle is bolted on - no QR) and it too has no dust covers (nor does it look like it ever did). Perhaps that was just the way some low end wheels were made.
