Skip tooth question

can you run a skip tooth front chainring with a regular pitch tooth rear cog?also, would you need a different chain? it seems like you could. the measurements seem the same but, sometimes bike measurements can be the same in numbers but not in true measurement. I.E. schwinn 26" x 1" 1/4 tyres.
