1959 English Miller headlight converted to a 1200 Lumen LED with removable/rechargeable battery. Strap the battery on when you need it, disconnect it and put it in the saddle bag when you don't.

I picked up this bike a while back, tis a 3 speed but not English.
It is a Japanese Bridgestone.

It has some different things on it. I found it with some 28" rims, replaced the tires and had the wheels respoked. I also had it painted the nice blue and had the cast aluminum lugs painted silver.

It had a junky Shimano 333 3 speed and I replaced it with a newer one with a better strap brake.

waiting on a couple of front brakes coming from America and I will put on a new front brake.

Hello all! I would like to put it out there that I am looking for a Lady's Raleigh Tourist. I posted this thread earlier today https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...-got-away.html but I thought my fellow 3 speed enthusiasts would also be able to help me find "my" bike.

I find that as I have gotten older, my taste in cars as well as bikes has changed. I used to want the racy red sportster, the twitchy handling, the feeling of the road underneath me, the get me there as fast as possible vehicle. But as I have aged I've come to appreciate a slower ride. One that may take longer but is soooo much more comfortable and gives me time to appreciate the scenery. And so now I own a big old sedan, that doesn't accelerate or corner like my 2 seater but is a much smoother ride and handles so much better over the rough roads. And now I want a big old 3 speed to go on fun slow rides around town and down our country lanes.

Any help at all or advice would be fantastic as I am just now starting my search. I can do a little wrenching myself (although I haven't worked on Raleigh's much) and I am currently working on my Raleigh Sprite as practice. So I am not afraid of a bike that needs work. I also don't care if it's mint or truly vintage, asI am looking for the ride feel more than the look.

I read this thread last night before going to bed. In my sleep I had a dream about my Rudge. It was hard to pedal, and it turned out tat sludge inside made an overhaul necessary. Weird. The bike is in FL and I won't see it again until April 2015.

Finally found a 23" 3 speed - 63-64 Raleigh Sports. Pretty decent overall shape, picked it up from a retired gentleman on craigslist who fixes them up and turns them around. He even had a 3-4 page print out from Sheldon's page explaining all the care and maintenance of the hub.

I've always loved how these ride. I've had a few 21" frames come and go but this is the first to actually fit. Had a blast enjoying the first rides this past weekend. Took it to the co-op and found a rack...will probably redo with p-clamps so it's not resting on the fender and it's leveled. Thinking a small wald basket up front and either folding baskets in the rear or a wood crate. New wheels go on Tuesday, I had a pair from a previous 3 speed waiting for this frame. 650b with dynamo/drum front hub.

Man, got so lucky tonight. Found a '60's Raleigh Tourist by a dumpster in an alley. Tires are flat and is definitely going to need some work, but looks like everything is there. I'll post some photos soon. Been wanting to join the three speed club for a while now. Stately touring, here I come.

I'm partial to the Trygg type ones that have two legs and mount down by the bottom bracket.

Thanks for the info about Trygg, SirMike1983. I think I might actually go with the Pletscher double kickstand. The Trygg kickstands seem a bit hard to find.

Yes, It's a nice bike SirMike . Does that bike have pump pegs and if not, what did you use?. I have several old Raleigh 3 speeds, some have pump pegs, some do not.

Stupid question but what is the correct size wrench to use on a Sturmey Archer AW axel nut? I always use an adjustable wrench as none of my SAE, Metric or even Whitworths seem to fit correctly. I know its a 13/32 thread. Thanks.

I've always used 15mm, but I suspect 9/16" might be closer to spec.

I just took my 1954 Triumph 3 speed for a 15 minute ride and I must say, there is something special about the sound the chain makes inside that chaincase! x

John: I just went and tried out a variety of NOS, new repro, and older SA axle nuts - both sides. 15mm fit them all as perfectly as I could expect - I could not get a 9/16 on any of them....surprising that 15mm seems to be the correct size given the many many attempts of the English to avoid the metric system over the years!!

Cones on SA hubs are also 15mm, locknuts 16mm.

Thanks for the responses. I also tried 9/16 and it was not big enough. The 15mm seemed a bit sloppy that's why I thought it might be some odd ball size. I even tried 19/32 and that was loose. Not a major issue but was curious. I also suffer from a tool addiction so was looking to add to the wrench collection

Also, my Raleigh has identical axels nuts on both sides with a separate do hickey for the indicator chain that treads on to the axel. What is that do hickey called? Thanks!!

Are you referring to the cylinder with the window that allows you to see the end of the axle to adjust the cable tension? Early hubs had these as separate pieces, later ones were just one piece, part HMN-129 "Right hand axle nut." A similar nut without the window was used with hubs that had the two-piece indicator, and the cable tension was set by adjusting it so the end of the indicator rod was flush with the non-drive-side end of the axle.

Yes, the cylinder with the window. Its a separate piece that screws on after the axle nut is installed.

Out of curiosity, what's the date code on your hub?

The date code is 73 which fits with the decals and adjustable brakes so I think its a 1973 bike.

Self adjusting brakes put it post-'73. Looks mid '70s based on color and decals, maybe a '74.

The 1973 catalog on the head badge site shows the self adjusting brakes and the decals, not to say they were not on later models.
