What a great looking bike. My Raleigh Twenty was originally that color and is getting powder coated now a deep shimmer green. I'm debating on what I want to do with the handlebars and yours look like a good match to the original. Would you mind posting a few side by side or comparison shots of original bar with the new Wald, or describe how they're similar/different?

Thanks for posting your bike. It's inspiring.

I think it's a Registered Design Number. Essentially, it's a Copyright thing.
You don't seem to see it as much nowadays, but we don't manufacture as many items in Britain as we once did...

Richmond seems to be a good place to pick up a vintage Raleigh for reasonable $$. I bought a Raleigh Sports a couple of weeks ago that was on CL in Richmond. A friend who lives there conducted the deal and got it for $25. He'll bring it to me over Thanksgiving when he visits relatives here. I noticed several good 3 speed deals in that area.

@adventurepdx - I thought that "camelback" had a bent top tube. The final one would be too big for me.

1953 Humber Sports. Equipped with CR-18s, 46 tooth chainring (instead of the stock 48 tooth unit), 19T on the rear, alloy body FW hub (so low is about the same as if the bike was equipped with an AW with 22 teeth.

Here are the original handlebars. The Wald 880 are higher, more swept back and the handle area tips down. They are mini ape-hanger bars. I have to be upright most of the time or the back of my neck/spine hurts. I still bend over for pushing if I want. I also have soft plastic grips, the old hunt-wilde stingray type that are extremely comfortable. I will try to get some comparison shots in a few days. It is too dark and dreary for my cell phone to get good garage shots for the next couple of days.

Sorry if I misled. I don't think there has ever been a "camelback" model, just that the bent top tube equals camelback. Looks to be a Sports.

I'm now the proud owner of a 1974 Raleigh Sport, if the hub is original. I paid $25! Surface rust only. The hubs, bb, and AW 3 speed hub are all sluggish and will need service. Happily the seat post and stem are not stuck! So I'll post photos once I have time.

Hard to tell from the picture if the camelback Raleigh has 24" or 26" wheels. If 26" it would be the compact frame Colt model. I believe 19" frame. 24" wheels would make it the Space Rider. Even smaller frame.

Look carefully at the chainguard, you'll see it's a Sports, so should be 26". Of course, the chainguard might not be original, but it does match the rest of the paint, so I would hazard the guess that it is indeed a Sports.

Ah, I misunderstood your post. AFAIK Raleigh used that frame style on a few 24" and 26" models.

Was the camelback frame style an effort on Raleigh's part to make a larger frame rideable for a smaller cyclist? The reason I ask is that the cranks on the few models that I have seen appear to be very short.

It is designed to be that way. The Raleigh Colt, Mountie, and Space Rider all came with a camelback frame. Raleigh called it a drop frame:
