Falcon San Remo

Although this is too big for me I bought it thinking I could put it back in shape and sell it, or sell it in parts. Serial number is 33449. The seller bought it new as a frameset in about 1980, and used it for touring. In addition to the Blackburn rack with a couple sets of panniers, it has a good condition Brooks Professional saddle. The components are a mix- Shimano 600 headset, crank and FD, Crane RD, Diacompe G brakes with fairly recent, at least compared to the frame, Shimano 105 Aero levers, Shimano hubs, Weinmann rims, Cinelli stem and SR handlebars. You can see it has some surface rust showing and paint nicks and scrapes. Seat post and stem are free and internally it looks looks OK. 531 Frame and forks, but pretty big, I measure 24.5" ctc seat tube. Keep it together or take it apart?

Bikes: Crap. The box is not big enough...

I don't believe anyone is gonna whine about pedigree and provenance. It is a nice bike but there are about a gazillion of 'em. Interesting parts mix. That Crane rear derailleur is a good one.

Nice. Falcons of that quality are rare. I'd leave it built-up. A lot of us ride larger bikes. I would find that bike very appealing if I was looking for a nice vintage road bike. Should bring a good buck as well.

I would definitely remove the seat and rack. Those will just be giveaways if you sell the bike complete. I would also remove the Crane RD with something that matches the rest of the components (Shimano 600) and has less value. I would deal with the minor rust, clean it up really well, and market the then complete bike. As is with some minor issues the bike would have about half of the value as it would cleaned up and ready to go.

I picked up a high end Falcon myself last month (not my size or I would keep it), and the value of the components exceed the value of the bike complete. So I will be parting it out. Your components are a mix of a couple of valuable pieces and the rest have limited value. And they do not match, so there is not much value to selling components as a group. So in your case, I think you would do better selling the bike complete, ready to go, with the part swaps I recommend above first.

Update: I took a quick spin on ebay, and similar Crane RDs are not going for much. So I leave that swap up to you. If you have something decent in the parts bin, I would still make the swap (as I rather have a Crane RD in the bin).

i have an older (1970's) San Remo, andI recently powdercoated it and built it up with STI shifters. Great bike.

How wide are those handlebars? Let me kow when you part it out, if they are wide enough, I'm interested.
