Here are the pics of the bike. I figured it out. i pulled this bike out of my uncles barn. it has alot of scratches but no rust. frame is straight, rims are true, all bearings in good shape. just cant seem to find any info on this bike. i figured this was a good start. it also has 24" rims

Looks like '59 or earlier. Phillips was taken over by Raleigh about then and after that they all look just like Raleighs. Yours looks sorta like a Raleigh but the fenders are definately not Raleigh. I had one of these, I can't find the thread right now and it's way past my bedtime but here's the photbucket album;

24" rims? that could be interesting!

Adult bikes --that's what most of these are-- have 26 x 1 3/8 rims. The words "DUNLOP 26 x 1 3/8 MADE IN ENGLAND" are usually printed on the inner surface of the rim, near the valve hole. Note, 26" rims measure about 23 7/8" (it's the tire that measures 26").

If your rims are labeled 24 x 1 3/8, you have a juvenile bike. These are really hard to find. I'd love to find one for my daughter, who turns 11 next week.

Yeah im trippin. the bike is a 26". i was just so caught up in this thing that i forgot about tire sizes. I have it all apart right now. Its getting ready for a bead blasting in my shop. Im just wondering since it is a womens bike, and the fact is that they are not worth as much, is should I modify this bike just for myself, or restore it back to original? I like the restored look as much as the modified look. Its a hard choice.

A proper restoration with box lining etc would be lovely; on the other hand.... What modifications are you considering?

I wasnt going to go all out but I was thinking of upgrading the wheelset to sturmey-archer 3sp hub with alex rims and a Miche primato cnc machined threaded headset. up grade the paint to something more easy on the eyes. the orange is a little bright. I will still use the stock cranks and fenders and keep the original parts in a box considering they are in good shape. I was thinking of upgrading the bottom bracket but it is so smooth that I will just clean it up and use it. Actually all the bearings on this bike are flawless. If you guys have any suggestions on a color scheme let me know. Im open for some ideas. and thanks again for the info on here. This has to be one of the best sites on the internet for vintage bikes that I have found.

If this is a pre-Raleigh Phillips (and I think it is) you do have the option of other headset and BB bearings; but these bikes came with excellent bearings anyway so, so since you say they are flawless, I'm not sure you really can improve on them. If it's Raleigh made you'll have 26 TPI threads, and the upgrade options are pretty limited.

Alex rims -- you mean 700c? The problem is finding a 40H rear rim. You could use 32H rims front and back, even with the 40H rear hub. I'm not sure the fenders will fit, though. Or you can get Sun CR18 rims in the correct (26 x 1 3/8") size. Sure, why not?

Color scheme... white(or cream) head tube and white (or cream) panel on the seat tube will offset any color nicely. You might also do the mudguards and chain guard white (or cream).

Oh, I see you don't have a chain guard. Might want to pick one up before you paint the rest!

i do have the chain gaurd. i just took it off because i had to clean off the black widows

I think that if you were to redo it, here's what I'd do:

New (or at least, post-73) Sturmey Archer 3 speed hub, alloy 590 rims, a Brooks B67, and a cream headtube and seat tube window, then paint the rest a Raleigh green or something otherwise properly subdued.

Well, the headbadge says "Birmingham" so I think it's a real Phillips, or at least a real Phillips headbadge! I'd clean it up and see what it was like before I changed anything, myself.

It's a real phillips - Raleigh got rid of the Phillips chainring when they switched over. They were bought out in '60 or "61, I think, so this would make it a '59 or older, I'd think.

sheldon brown dates it definately pre-60's. i might just throw some new tubes and tires on it and leave it like it is. who knows
