And a lucky find for the price. All the Salvation Army stores around here look stuff up on ebay now, apparently. I saw a mid level Lemond there once, For $700. That SC in the stores here would be between 2-3 hundred bucks.,,,,BD

I agree! I did not know what I was buying, but I could tell for a bike like this to have no rust, tires that were true, and good looking components, it was a good deal. I'll post a picture again after I take it apart, clean it, and put it back together. It will take a while since I will need to learn how to do everything along the way! I am gladly open to suggestions if anyone has any. I'm not sure if I should restore everything as it is, or get new spokes for the rims and such.

I'm planning on putting a standard B17 on the bike. Do you guys have a suggestion for the color?

This bike's color scheme really benefits from white handlebar tape - which pretty well limits you to a black leather saddle, as was originally spec'd.

I have two B-17's narrow saddles. One is perfect and the other very nice. Both are brown and don't care if they are original color or not. You start putting Suntour derailleurs and the like on, then originality goes out the window anyway. I like the way the brown accents the bike...purely subjective.

Picked up two 1973 Super Courses for a good price last week. Both Carlton frames. They seem to be all there (with a couple exceptions) and original. One has the Brooks saddle - one does not. Both need to loose the nasty foam handlebar "stuff". Lots of degreasing, cleaning, polishing, lubing, etc. to be done...but I am looking forward to it. Glad to join this thread.

What a great introduction Alexander! That's a doubly fantastic snag - both appear to be in nice condition (except for that handlebar foam! ) and they'll look and ride wonderfully once you get done with the lubing, cleaning % polishing! - And one can never have too many old SC's. Welcome to C&V.

Anyone need a giant Super Course frame? I don't believe that's a 61, not by a long shot. I am thinking it's in the 65-68 range.,,,,BD

Great score Alexander...two of them! Welcome to the forum. Every time one of these is brought back to life, we all learn something. Mine is pretty much a wreck and waiting to be restored. I have most of the parts, except the correct rims. Let us know about your progress and keep the pics coming!

I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice about the value of some wheels. I bought a 77-78 RSC a while back and fixed it up. I put new wheels on it because the original wienmann (?) concave alumunim wheels that were on it had seized up spokes. When the bike shop tried to true it, the spokes started breaking. So it needed some pb blaster and some time, and possibly new spokes.

Long story short, I took the old wheels, one with a few broken spokes, and hubs (which are in very nice shape), and put them aside, meaning to change out the spokes and learn how to build a wheel. Projects have piled up at this point, and the el cheapo wheels i bought to replace them work beautifully, so I'd like to sell the originals on craigslist.

Can you guys advise me what I should ask for them? I can post pictures when I get home.

Thanks!

Do the rims have eyelets? If so they are pretty nice rims. Were it me, I'd just buy some new spokes from Danscomp and rebuild them, since the hubs are in good shape. A great opportunity to do some beginner wheel building for little $$. Just measure the originals (front, rear drive-side, and rear NDS) and call in an order:

27" freewheel wheelset with rusty spokes? I usually give them away to the co-op. Maybe $10 to the right buyer.

cyrano - The pricing question probably ought to be directed to the "What's it worth" subforum, but I will say that Weinmann concaves are about as nice as a rim can get.
+1 to @jeirvine : They are very much worth relacing with some ss spokes.
I order mine from Childhood dreams, as do many others here.
And don't forget to get the brass nipples!

Thanks for the helpful replies, everyone! I wish I could take them on as a project, but it's just not going to happen. I'm going to post them on CL for 50 bucks and see if anyone bites.

Sorry I didn't post it in the right thread the first time.

Congrats, @rgver. What are your initial thoughts? Good thing the previous owner took care of the crank upgrade. What tires are on it? At this point, I'd say ride it without changing it. Decide later what you'll do. It may be fine or nearly fine as it is.

That bike has good possibilities, rgver... I would lose the Technomatic stem too, but if that's an Ultegra tricolor crankset, I'd keep it. Aesthetically, I think it's one of the nicer-looking cotterless alternatves I've seen on these bikes -at least if you don't plan to go back to the OEM cottered set up.

@Bikedued it's the second I acquired on bikes recently

@noglider first impressions were really hampered by the gel seat and gel bar grab on like sleeves making the bike feel weirdly slimy. Heavy compared to my Viscount but then most things do since my last round of upgrades on it.

@auchencrow I am tempted to match the tricolor thoughout, but also tempted to go with a Campy 9sp ergo set up I have.

it's about to be torn into now, I'll see how I like it with a sensible seat (unfortunately no Brooks) and bar set up. It has a lot to do to make it into my slim keeper collection, it may usurp the later 70's Grand Prix though.

I think you'll like it a lot more than the Grand Prix! The Super Course's ride is better than it deserves to be. Just one of those magical things. At least mine is, as it's a 55cm. It's an eager climber.

I agree gel seats and handlebars are creepy. Even padded seats bother me. I once had one that caused me no pain on the bike, but I got achy balls the following day, every time. It took me a long time to correlate the two things. I quickly got rid of the seat.

An early Suntour Superbe crank would look great though. I have one of these on my 81 Super Course, and a previous owner installed drilled rings. It came on the mostly Campy GS Trek 510 I bought 4-5 years ago.,,,,BD

Even one of the nice old flat face 70's Stronglights would fit the genre of bike, and look good as well.
