Well, I had to degrease, clean and polish 48 year old spokes, nipples, rims and hub. Some spokes were bent near the nipple so I put them aside and measured all the spokes in my small collection. I usually find factory spokes are on the longer side often protude from the nipple. For the rear wheel build I used Sheldon Brown advise of using thicker spokes on the drive side, I had some Wheelsmith spokes that matched my calculations. I actually liked that, it totally makes sense. Spoke tension is uniform after the dishing of the wheel.

My BB unfortunately DOES have the proprietary threaded bracket. I ended up going through the boxes of square taper BB spindles at the bike shop I usually go to till i found one that fit cups. It is a 21- 1/2. I do have some toe overlap but, as some people might let you know, Raleigh wasn't always consistent with angles and fork rake and such and the fork on mine has less rake than other Super Courses I see and my other Raleighs that should have identical angles.

Posted this bike awhile back, but finally got around to putting some miles on it. Struggled with the Suntour barcons shifting, and cable routing. Initially set it up stock with the cables exiting the bars near the brake levers, as seen in the Raleigh catalogues, shifting extremely stiff, too much friction.
Then tried the standard routing with cables exiting at the lower bar flat, still stiff and didn’t like the view with the cables sticking out in front of the bike.
Thinking part of the problem was the old nos cables and metal sheathing, I purchased some higher end Yokozuna vintage inner and outer cables, and decided to try routing the cables out the top of the bars. I really didn’t like the look of the previous 2 cable routing methods.
Happy with the results, bike shifts well, my first bike with barcons, a little more convenient then DT levers, I like em. Also first bike with a Brooks saddle, but nothing else looked right on that frame. Must of picked the right one, because didn’t really notice much difference, a real non issue.

If you have a friend with a lathe you can get 26TPI threads cut on a set of italian bb cups and use a square taper cartridge long enough that fits the cups.

There's another frame working its way through a rescue with Capella lugs, and I just looked at them and yes, if this frame had those points there'd be no room for the headbadge.

I just bought what may be a 1978 Super Course frame in pretty poor condition. Lots of nicks and surface rust, especially on the cable guides and near or around the lugs. It has a frozen stem, so I'm using the inverted ammonia soak in the steerer tube. It should work. The headset is smooth, but the chrome is badly pitted and flaking. I'd like to replace it, but have to wait for the stem to be free for this.

Can any Raleigh expert tell me whether the '78 has a standard English headset/steerer threading or the proprietary Raleigh threading?

My 79, which looked almost exactly like that 78 was all standard threading.

Sorry for the late reply Phil, but my 78 shown in reply #1904 is also standard threading, and the headset looks just like yours.

^that's good. Thanks, fellows. Once I get the stem out, I can remove the headset and measure accordingly. PG

There's a Super Course on CL Rhode Island for $80.
I was tempted to look, but I'm at least at N+2

This has been posted before, but this is my '78, purchased as a $20 Craigslist project. I recently upgraded the wheels with a set of Campy hubs laced to MA40s. Its a fun bike, and has become my goto daiily rider for errands, like the sidewalk library, yesterday. I also have a dark green custom painted '73 SC, which I also love, and a came across a stunning gold Peugeot PR10. This is the best of both, SC ride quality, with gold paint that I love on the Pug.

My '73 SC, restored from a trashed scrapped frame.

I completed the transformation over a year ago, I stored all of the original bits as they are all still in NOS condition (even the tape is stored). The saddle had to be replaced due to an inguinal operation but it still is an incredible ride.

Thanks so much, it's a non stock color, a Toyota Spruce Mica, a dark British green, but with small metallic flakes.

26 TPI aluminium headsets - small run

I've got a lathe and a tap and I'm going to make a few 26 TPI headsets (from 24 TPI ones).

This started because I have a Super Course with a 26TPI fork.

See my ad in the C&V sales forum.

-About how much should you pay for a very good condition super course MK II,? Very good paint-1970s with capella lugs? Good condition, ok paint -Grant Sport ok , to so so.condition, scratches all are pretty original . I had a 1970s with capella lug frame .I built up with newer components and loved the ride , however. I took off the components for something else and gave away the frame as the paint job was terrible spray job from somebody I had traded with . Was a shame because I had totally stripped it and prepared to bare frame . I should have just done it myself with a spray can ,,,, sorry for rambling..
well my question now is, these bikes came up for sale locally and I'm starting to think I'd like to have one again! let me know what you tthink on price and model. ?? thank you in advance

There's a subforum dedicated to those questions:
https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...th-appraisals/

Post there, and include a link to the bike or add pictures.
we're very helpful and usually a member will link pictures if you can't publicly post them yet.

Finished

Waiting for my reproduction headbadge. I rode it yesterday and again today. It rides really nicely. Sportier than I would have thought.

Here’s my ‘72 that I found at a church rummage sale over the summer. It was a mess, but for $40, it was only a few parts away from a dream bike. Well, maybe more than a few parts. It’s dreamy now, though.

I need to add some details to the build thread because there were quite a few fiddly details.

@Phil_gretz, nice build.

I also run Ultra Sports on my Super Course and have been pleased with the ride. Great tire for the price.

I recently picked up a 73 or 74 Super Course, which needed a decent amount of work to make it ridable, but was in good shape overall. This thread has been very useful while fixing it up!

I replaced the cracked front derailleur with a NOS Suntour, put a new chain on it, and new brakes. It still has the stock Brooks saddle, as well as (I assume) a not stock leather seat bag.

I am selling it, if anyone in the Philadelphia area is interested: https://philadelphia.craigslist.org/...246056067.html

It's a super cool bike, if the frame were my size I would definitely be keeping it. At any rate, thought you all would enjoy the photos!
