I think there are a couple that are somewhat identifiable... oh well, you do what you can I guess. I only casually glanced through the stories as I was posting and barely caught that a handful of them had the builders name written in it.

I like the $1,500 cheapo bike, I wonder how much a high dollar bike project from him could run?

This is great! Excellent work.

Now see the winner reclaim that headset for his/her Velo Cheapo 2011 build

Thank You All, 'Tis a small token of my appreciation to be a part of an activity that is so near & dear to my heart. IMHO, the builders are the 'winners'... all of'em. Sadly, I just didn't have enough parts to fab, what is it?... 16 trophies? The blessing now is, I have a whole year to tweak & massage my build for VCBO 2011. So those who didn't participate this year, better get to crackin'...

I was guessing the head tube came from an Atala? I love how you used a spoke to write 2010, brilliant!

I honestly don't remember the maker, but I have pics on another computer so I'll look when I get a chance - an odd foreign name is about all I recollect. The pics above don't show, but I left about an inch of TT and DT still attached, intending to preserve the lugs.

Glad you like it - I'm rather fond of it myself - was tough to see it disappear in the shipping box. When I do projects like that, I build spontaneously, with little pre-planning. The color was the most difficult, so I chose blue because it typically represents highest honor or prize awarded at county fairs.

Hummm.. nope! But hey!... they're clean, so if they should fail within 10k miles or 90 days, I'll replace'em free! (seriously, I did over-tighten the headset a tad to inhibit unwanted head tube rotation - particularly since it's the most inviting thing to grab)

I think my favorite might be number 8. It's nuckin' futs! I would put on taller handlebars, though. Since it's made for cargo, I wouldn't want to be leaning down that far.

Bumping the thread to the top so I can look at the entries and match them with owners revealed in the "winners" thread.

Yup, it was fun and I will definitely participate again next year. A template for costs is an excellent idea, maybe we could have a theme too...grocery-getter or all-weather bikes...

I swear, on a stack of Brooks Saddles, to never use the headset in another build. PaPa's trophy is just way too cool.

PB,

Was thinking... in the spirit of dumpster reclamation and precious metal conservation, 'we' dub that piece the Velo-Cheapo World Cup. I can fab new dates so we can pass that trophy from winner to winner. Just think how much it'll save on duplication and shipping costs...

Baring that idea, I do another one these hangin' on my wall I could convert...

You are good. I like your work! By any chance did you make this piece I spotted in Montpelier, VT last summer?

WoW!... I'd love to take credit for that piece, but I'd be lying through my teeth. What'a stunner! Excuse me while I go count my cogs.

Pains me to think of how many usable Shimano UG 13t and 14t cogs are in that sculpture though

I spy a lot of Hyperglide though - what a relief

I was blown away by it when I spotted it and realized what it was made from. It was probably about 3.5-4 feet in diameter. All I had was my cell phone to take the picture. It was sitting outside of an art studio and if I remember correctly had recently been sold. I doubt if it is still there. I pondered for hours how it could be constructed in such a perfect sphere. My guess is it was made on a form, 1/2 at a time, and then joined together.

Most of the cogs did appear to have been used and I believe most were HGs!
