Trading thread for same model / different size trades?

Having any of you used the trading thread to trade the same frame model in different sizes?

Nope, but that's a fine idea. I have two frames that I love but are a smidge too small for me (the Butler and the Cherubim). I was planning on selling locally, but might consider posting up. Thanks!

That's my thought. I have a 53 square Pnarello record which I can ride, but might be better off wth a 55 or 56.

Bikes: 1940s Fothergill, 1959 Allegro Special, 1963? Claud Butler Olympic Sprint, Lambert 'Clubman', 1974 Fuji "the Ace", 1976 Holdsworth 650b conversion rando bike, 1983 Trek 720 tourer, 1984 Counterpoint Opus II, 1993 Basso Gap, 2010 Downtube 8h, and...

I guess with a Pinarello or the like, your chances are fair.

I'd gladly trade my Norman, with its 55 cm frame, for a bigger one; but the odds of finding another one (let alone in the same condition) are practically nil.

The same goes for my Counterpoint Opus II; it has a 54 cm seat tube, and I'd prefer a 60. I don't know the odds of finding another one, but I won't be betting on it.

All that said, do love the idea!

I have tried to do that exact thing, posted in FS/FT offering to trade a complete bike (56cm Centurion Turbo) for the same in a smaller size. I suppose I could take it down to the frame, but it's all original.

So far there are nibbles but no bites. Actually there is some guy in N Carolina who would certainly devour it, and I think he is watching as hard as I am for a 52-54cm Turbo to surface. He is kind of a Centurion nut, but I think he is harmless.

Or I might just sell it, a hipster down the block wants to turn it into a fixie.

I really shouldn't joke around like that, I don't know when Robbie had his last stress test.

My Raleigh Gran Course is a nice frame, but at 57 cm C/T, it's about 5 or so cm shorter than what I'd like it to be. My choices in 1985 were 57 or 62 (what was in stock) and I chose wrong.

It's fully Reynolds 531C, with Gipiemme chromed dropouts, Prugnat windowed lugs, sloping shoulders on “lugless” fork crown. Criterium geometry (74/74 angles on head and seat tube, high-ish BB, 998 mm wheelbase). Downtube graphics are vinyl letters, which are starting to peel, but it looks very good for its age, and has always been kept indoors.

I'd only do a frame swap for something 61 to 63 cm; no components. More pics here.

I've had some success at this, pretty much by accident, though...and not trades, exactly...
Sold 52cm Centurion/Cinelli Equipe, bought 56cm same.
Sold 60cm Centurion Ironman Carbon, bought 56cm same.
Traded 60cm Centurion Ironman Carbon, for 56cm Ironman frame (steel)

I'll put one out there, though.....

Have: 54cm Schwinn 564 Aluminum (actually 535mm) still in tedious touchup phase
For: 56cm Schwinn Aluminum model (564 didn't come in 56cm)...

Hmm. Seems that most of us are looking for something bigger than what we have.

My Rauler and Cherubim/Echelon are both roughly 56 x 56. I'd be interested in frames that are equally interesting in the 57 to 59 range.

Cheers!

Hey Neal, I have a 24" 74 Sports Tourer in Cool Lemon that I'd trade for a decent Raleigh or something interesting in the same size or just a little bigger.

I noticed that too. It seem to me that the standard texts/formulas/charts for this sort of thing convince people (us) that they need to be riding a smaller frame than many of them are really comfortable with, especially as we age, get less flexible, want bars higher, and also ride with the idea of seeing something, rather than going somewhere fast. I know that's what happened to me.

I'll go the other way - I have a 62cm Belgian Superia frame set that I'll trade for any comperable frame set 52cm or smaller.

Also, there is the selection process, itself. That is, when you go to look at a bike, you know right away if the bike is too big. But if it's a size or two small, and you want that bike, there is more of a tendency to decide you can ride it. And, it is virtually impossible to tweak a big bike to make it "smaller." However, it is possible to increase the cockpit size of a small bike. Sometimes it works, even well, sometimes it doesn't.

BTW, I posted three frames on the trading forum. We'll see what happens.

I'll throw one in as well. I have an 81 Austro Daimler Vent Noir II, smoked chrome, original and full campy size 55cm. Looking to trade for same bike in 57cm or 59cm.

i've got a 58cm c-t shogun touring frameset (or complete bike, depending-- it's the one in my signature) that i'd like to trade for something comparable but larger, in the range of 61-62cm.
