Celluloid mudguards
I know these aren't nearly as good as modern stuff, but I'd still like to try some on a "vintage" British-style clubman. I've looked at all the usual sources, Ebay included, with no luck. Anyone know where I might find a pair?

i got these bluemels club specials from ebay - the guy was based in cyprus. They come up from time to time.
I prefer them to SKS guards (in fact i used the SKS safety release on these guards)

When i hear celluloid i think of the pearloid on guitars and banjos. Now I want pearloid fenders.

Hiding in TOS(The Old Shed)...
Some time ago another forum member contacted me about plastic fenders. I looked in The Old Shed and found a couple of sets. Can't remember exactly what they were but one set was NOS and still in their plastic sheaths but missing the original struts to mount with. The other was a set of Lightweight, used but in good shape and complete as I recall. They are back in The Old Shed now since the interested person never got back to me.
Personally, I prefer alloy fenders and I have a few sets of these guys, in great shape, tucked away. Leave them original or paint em up. Great fenders from the mid seventies and they fit either 27" or 700c wheels. I tuck these fender sets away every chance I get.

Shame on you!

I'd ride the tires off that bike. Black mudguards look fantastic sir.
Probably easier to set up than the Berthouds I installed for my brother yesterday.

Mudguard mounting option
I see a lot of Bluemels/SKS's mounted with the stays left long and the little rubber tips in place. Eventually these disappear into the ozone and the stay shreds your flesh. This method is a little tidier. Mount them, ride them until your sure they're positioned correctly. Mark the stays almost flush to the nut and cut them. Invert the nut and the end of the stay tucks away nicely.
Guess I should clean the salt way but I'm not convinced winters gone for good.

Good idea, clubman.
I recently bought the fancy SKS "chromo-plastic" fenders for my Surly Cross Check. The LBS owner who sold them to me pointed out that the longitudinal center is plastic, isolating the sides, electrically. This means, he pointed out, that you can insert a wire into the end of each side and use the aluminum sides as conductors. Thus, you can mount a taillight on the end, without any wires running along the fender.
Cute, huh?

You can probably find the hardware. Once you do that, you can command a pretty penny for the set in the marketplace. The demand for white Bleumels is high, and the supply is abysmal. I don't think anyone currently makes white fenders.

I'm in Southern California and I'm looking for (of course) white ones.
As an aside, I've read some reports (facetious ones, perhaps) of celluloid mudguards catching fire, so am led to believe that they really were celluloid. Could certainly be wrong though.

That's good to know, once I source some hardware. They came in on a 1973 World Voyageur, but am not sure if they're going back out with the bike.

BTW, this is the bike for which I want them.

I am going to change from fixed/wooden rims to three speed Sturmey-Archer with traditional polished aluminum box section rims. I think some traditional fenders will go perfectly.

Dunno about the 'of course'... I think this looks better in green:

... and this one in blue:

... and I can't see this in white

As for the frame, it says "Ashdown", which is taken from a favorite Patterson drawing of a British touring cyclist entitled "Touring the Ashdown Forest". The frame is brand new; I made it myself a few months ago, using 531, and copying the British style of the 40s.
