Fender Question! (V-O content)

I'm looking to outfit a mixte Fuji Gran Tourer SE with some Velo Orange polished aluminum fenders. I currently am running 700x28c wheels on the bike, and my question for you C+ver's is what size fender should I get? I have the options of 37mm and 45mm fenders. I'm worried the 45mm will be too big and the 37mm too small. An important note: this bike is being built for a lady friend, so aesthetics are very important for this build.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

If you never plan on running a larger tire I would go with the 37mm, if you think you might go larger get the 45mm, or buy both and keep the other set until you need them.

Get a Berthoud or Honjo in 40mm. 37 is sorta small, and 45 is too big. 40mm will be just right.

The Honjo's are nice but a bit out of my price range. I'm thinking of going with the 37's and seeing how they work out.

I think you'll be ok w/ the 37's. I have the 45's and they are huge. They'll be way too big for those tires...

agreed. i'm running the VO 37's on a bike with 25mm tires, and the clearance is already fairly tight. i imagine that if i had 28mm tires, it wouldn't work. the 40mm berthouds would work well, and they're around the same price as the VOs (maybe even less-- anyone noticed the huge price hike on the VOs recently? they went from $39 to $51 in one fell swoop).

Alright thanks, I'm going to check out the Berthoud's. Is there a good website you suggest that carries them?

Peter White is the man for Berthouds, at least that is where I've always bought them.

Bikes: old,older.and very old

Which ever you get install them using leather spacers or washers--reduces the noise lever so you don't sound like a rolling scrap wagon

I have the 52s, so sweet,.. but in all seriousness I would go with the 45s,,, what if she wants a cushier ride and wants 32mm tires? I recommend 32 for just about everyone on commuters and town bikes... or 37mm tires if they want the added cush or are carrying a load.

Bikes: Nishiki Olympic 12 Mixte, Raleigh DL-1 lady

I am admittedly running honjos, 45mm over 32mm schwalbe marathons on my Nishiki mixe, and this clearance it not the best, as there is some rubbing where the clearance is tight in the rear over the brake bridge. So, be aware that some tire may be "beefier" than others. I have been meaning to downgrade my tires to better accommodate my fenders, to some other less beefy brand in 28mm width, but I haven't bothered doing do. The minimal rub that I am getting has not seemed to impact my ride or my tires, so I persist with it. In any case, schwalbe marathons in 27" tires only come in 32mm, so that is what I get. I like the comfort and security of this width of tire though... your lady friend may prefer a larger tire, so I too vote for the larger width fender!

You can get your Berthoud fenders without the attitude from wallbike.com.

There is a sizing chart on the Berthoud page.
