joined. You can post pics to the Group photo Album...

another advantage is that if other people discover it you might get to know some folks outside of C&V who also like IGH's....might even hear about some modern tech like belt drive.

I think a re-appearance of Direct Drive might be cool done with an IGH. I'm fascinated by shaft drive. (now don't nobody go twisting my words there )

Does a 4 speed FW count? Can I toss my 1939 Schwinn New World in for good measure?

how the heck do you hold onto those bars? Looks like your hands would just slip off unless you had monster grip strength

Yes, but only if you tell us that picture was *NOT* taken today!

Hi, I'm not the rest of you all, I could quit if I wanted to. I only keep one 3speed in my office, sometimes I like to just sit on it in the middle of the day, back peddle a few times, wipe up an oil drip.....nothing serious.

I normally don't ride more than 8-10 miles at a time. However, my dad and I have talked about riding to see my sister and her family this summer, about 60 miles away. I think a Clubman style Takara would work nicely for that.
I built this frame from Reynolds 531.

It is a copy of a 1940s British "club" bike. I am using a 1960 four speed Sturmey FM hub, and like it all very much.

FWIW, I have a thread on the topic up on the Southern California section. I'd encourage anyone who may be interested in a Lake Pepin style ride in SoCal to take a look.

LOL! It was taken March 12, the day after my birthday. We had an amazing in the 50s F day and the blue sky. I actually rode in shorts. I had completed rebuilding the New World over the winter, so this was the first ride it had seen in who knows how many decades? This stop along the frozen lake begged for a photo opt!

Not a monster grip--- but the sheer force of an overweight body nailing me to them regardless of the angle!

The bars are Soma Major Taylor repops. A similar set of bars would have been a Schwinn option back in the late 30s. I have not set mine up exactly the same. I was hoping for some "flat" on the "tops" but I still need to tweak the set up some.

A better picture of the bars before I wrapped them in VO Elkhide.

That's what I am talking about on Page 2 of this thread

"Some of the routes I take have proven to be a little overwhelming for an internally geared 3-speed. However, if I rode flat and level routes, I'd take a 58CM double-butted Reynolds 531 road frame with braze-ons for 2 water bottle cages & rear rack + pump peg, add alloy North Road bars and comfortable "ergo" hand grips & an alloy stem, drop the smaller ring on an alloy cotterless chainwheel, lace a Sturmey Archer 3-speed hub to an alloy rim, put a Brooks B-66 on an alloy seat post with an allen wrench binder bolt, use Dia-Compe 500G side-pull brakes, add SKS commuter fenders, add a Jim Blackbourne rear rack, use Dia-Compe 500G side-pull brakes with a sweet pair of suntour alloy brake levers that I have, and add a Union generator light set."

I'm honored! I'll see what I can do. By the way, that bike isn't really orange. It's burgundy, with gold box lining. It has faded, over time, to orange with burgundy box lining.

You can get a new 16" chrome pump at some bike shops; it's made in China and it's an okay (not great) pump. I got one for $6, which I thought was a fine price.

But frankly I think you're better off getting a NOS pump off ebay; measure the pump pegs on your bike, and see what you find (a lot!).

My Norman Rapide came with its pump, an aluminum Bluemels pump that appears to be as old as the bike; perhaps original equipment. I got the white one on the orange Norman on ebay; it was NOS, missing its hose, and really cheap. My LBS had a hose, so I'm in business.

I used to hate those, I called them half-hill pumps, because your half way up a hill, slogging away, the pump falls off, and goes rolling back down the hill, just before you get back down to it, a car runs over it....

Haha, you said shaft drive...hehehehe.

Shaft Drive with Shimano IGH

I'm intrigued by belt drive also, but I think you actually have to cut your rear dropout apart to install the belt.

Yep; I keep forgetting my Brompton M6L has a SRAM 3-speed hub combined with a 2-cog freewheel and derailleur.

Here are some pics of my first total 3 speed conversion. It feels I've been working on it forever, but it's finally done.....mostly. I have a dyno hub for the front wheel, once my rim and spokes come. I really like how this turned out though. Maybe it's all in my head, but it rides so smooth and is so much fun to ride!

My wife asked me why I take more pictures of my bikes than I do of her. LOL

Is that a 3-speed conversion? Or factory?

The only way to break the addiction is the same way you deal with everything else in life: you put down one foot, then the other, then another, then you shift into 2nd gear, and ... dang it, just fell off the wagon again!

A work in progress. The hub is an SA5-2. The paint is rattle can acrylic enamel, three coats of red and four coats of clear over the decals. The frame is a 1974 Raleigh Competition.

Bikes: Giant Excursion, Raleigh Sports, Raleigh R.S.W. Compact, Motobecane? and about 20 more! OMG

Not sure HOW I missed this thread...I must have been out to lunch or out riding...yeah that's it I was out riding...a three speed

I currently have around 9 bikes with the SA hubs on them (the number fluctuates daily)

Most are Raleighs; 2-3 Twentys, 1968 Compact RSW, 197? Sports Standard, 1972 Superbe, 1971 Colt, 1975 DL-1 Tourist, 1964 AMF/Hercules and a 1966 Columbia Commuter II...I think that is all of them, but a few might have snuck in over the past week while I am out of town.

BTW can't help the hopeless

Aaron

Grand Bois: I'm still in love with your Carlton! I think it's the color that gets me. Very cool! What bars are going on that Raleigh Competition? Is it going to be a 3-speed conversion similar to your Carlton?

wahoonc: That's quite a collection! Me likey!

Does wahoonc win? Anybody have more than 9 currently? nlerner, how many do you have again?
