What do you guys think of this Fuji Del Rey?

I'm going to take a look at it tonight. I realized it originated as more of a hybrid, but does it have faux cyclocross potential. He did put some good stuff on the bike.

Thanks

Very nicely upgraded. $200 for a 20 year old hybrid is insane. Just a matter of how much you like the bike, and how well the upgrades were implemented.

Earlier Del Reys (mid 1980s) were very competent road bikes. I had a 1984 Del Rey last year, it was one of my all time favorite bikes.

The price is only insane if you're buying it to flip it. I think it's well worth the price with those upgrades if you're looking for a rider.

I agree, definitely worth $200 with those upgrades.

My basic economics: Nice vintage hybrid, in excellent condition: $125 to $145. Upgrades: drop bars, barcons, aerolevers, etc. Bike was originally all Exage, so it sounds like an extensive list of upgrades (HS, BB, crank, RD). If these are upgrades you want, then the value quickly is up to $200. It would certainly cost you quite a bit more than $200 to complete this upgrade if you started with a $125 hybrid. If these are upgrades you are not looking for (you are just looking for a good clean hybrid), then it is back to the $145 value.

Upgrades that the end user wants = value. Upgrades that the end user can live without = no additional value. Certainly there will be a buyer, in a town the size of Phoenix, that would want a bike with those upgrades. It that buyer is you, go for it.

well the upgrades may be worth $200 but something is telling me that is not a full CroMo frame nor fork. while it may have been a capable midlevel hybrid it may not make a great cyclocross bike.

Keep in mind the ad says only the parts listed are included. Thus, unless I'm missing something, the wheels, saddle, pedals, and pump. are not included. (Chain and bottle cage are not mentioned either, but I'm assuming those are included?) So, you have to factor the additional items into the total price, which may push the total into the $300-400 range. You might do better looking for a complete bike at that point.

RFC, Lot's of questions to ask per the above. I'd say proceed with caution. I think Bianchigirl is right about the frame and I wouldn't buy it if its not chromo.
EDOT: When all else fails, read the directions. It's a chromoly frame, but does not appear to be double butted.

Agreed, worth it if no major changes are planned.

Good point. Without wheels, not such a great deal.

But the things that aren't included are listed in the ad and the wheels aren't on the list.

Thanks all. I think I will let this one pass primarily because I'm burned out on build projects and just want to ride. However, it is a nice collection of parts and would make a great canal type cyclocross bike for someone here in the Valley.

BTW, I recall from reading the catalogs and specs that the 1991 Del Rey was the top of their "cross" bikes and is at least a double butted cromo frame.

Edited -- I must correct myself:

Looks like a long top tube, and that's probably why it's too big for the seller. My Specialized Crossroads was a similar bike, and I couldn't quite make it work with drops or mustache bars - too much of a stretch.

Kinda odd that one of the things not included is the bar tape. Maybe it's Brooks or something.
