Downtube shifters on a downtube without them

I love downtube shifters. They're so much more simple than brifters, much more simple, and much more versatile in switching parts out. However, most decent mass-produced frames lack braze-ons for downtube shifters.

This lead me to the question: is it possible to run downtube shifters on a frame without braze-ons without actually brazing metal onto the frame? Thanks.

Yes, but you need a clamp w/ the correct shift lever bosses on it. These are not hard to find.

if you want friction there are lots out there. indexing is a bit harder though. and of course your frame needs to be round for the clamp to fit. this IMHO is a serious downfall of the bike industry to make all frame to have brifeters on and not atleast have a few with the ability to put DT shifters on.

great looking bike.

OH PS most older bikes that had clamp on shifters or a clamp on housing stop had a 'stop' of some type to keep the clamp from sliding

Thanks, Bianchigirl. I am pretty partial to Bianchis, as well.

My Capo Modell Campagnolo was built in 1959 in Vienna, Austria from British tubing and Italian lugs, with Campagnolo hubs, derailleurs, and shifters. The shifters and brakeset are original. The color scheme is almost historically accurate, with CyclArt's gorgeous stock metallic almost candy burgundy red replacing the original candy apple.

Bikes: Upright and Recumbent....too many to list, mostly Vintage.

I had a hard time finding an indexed set of clamp on shifters so I made one using the clamp band from a Shimano downtube ratchet shifter and a set of shimano SL downtube shifters. Remove the ratchet shifters, screw on the indexed ones.

All the clamp-on shifters i've seen are 28.6.. I was really hoping there'd be ones with bigger clamps as to use more modern frames with bigger tubing. What would be needed to redo it to make the clamp larger?
