I acquired a nice 1979(?) Takahashi Sannow a while back. Too bad it is a little small for me. Still fun to ride.

Tange 1 tubing, shimano-FS dropouts, cutout lugs, good mix of components.

Last summer I acquired a 1976 Supercycle Excalibur from the original owner of the bike, and the store it was sold at! Supercycle is the store brand for Canadian Tire, an automotive and sporting goods store that started in Canada in 1922 and continues still. The bike was built in Japan by Bridgestone and is mostly alloy with cast lugs.
At the time it was their top of the line bike and sold for$199. I added the Toba fenders and new pedals, saddle and bell. Everything else is original.

These are an interesting design in that the lugs are aluminium and the frame tubes are steel... I have seen quite a good number of these over the years.

A Sannow! I love how every Sannow I've seen pictures of has different lugs and construction, yours is especially pretty.

This one has all alloy tubes with the exception of the seat tube. I assume it is steel to hold the expanding type seat post securely. My strong shop magnet also found steel reinforcement near the top of the seat stays. The fork is Tange steel. The tubing decal on the seat post simply says "Light Alloy" even though the seat post is the only tube that is not alloy. The cast alloy lugs in the rear triangle were for an early form of disc brakes. This one came equipped with Dia-Compe alloy centre-pulls. Kabuki and Skyway were other similar frames by Bridgestone in the day.
As advertised in the product description:

Older Geoffrey Butler. Model I have no idea, year model either. I somehow upset the "one" person that could help on retrobike, or so he says. I still have no idea what I said or did. The only thing he would say is that he thought it might be from the sixties not seventies. Butted 531, chrome Nervex lugs, and two tone paint. It's a real beauty, I just wish I knew what model or year it is. Couldn't find another even close to the same on the web after a month or so of searching images, and weeding out the Claude Butlers.,,,,BD

It was a bare frame, so I have no idea what the original components were, or anything...but I am glad to have it. It's gorgeous, and rides like a dream.

This is a very nice frame. Take a few detail photos of clusters, head lug work, fork crown, seat stays, bb, etc. Post 'em here.

But also post them to the CR list. There are some remarkable resources for British built frames who are active there.

It has a build/find thread already, and the pictures have not been moved or deleted. Befores and afters, etc. It was like a welcome back present from Lake Charles. My buddy who knows I like old road bikes, and frequents a bicycle shop slash salvage yard out in the sticks, drives me over there with my black Bianchi trade bait in the bed of his truck. I was back in town less than a week, and had already found a frame to build. I tore down my Grand Record, and built this up. I've ridden it only a handful of times, and only if the weather is guaranteed no rain.,,,BD

Geoffrey Butler is a well-known marque, at least in my books. Don't put much stock into the paint job as identifier, tho. Both my Hetchins and Wrigley have the same style paint details. It is more likely to tell you who did the paint job than who built the frame. C&G in Leeds, for example, did finish work for dozens of builders. (My Hetchins was painted there.) Others finishers just copied the style.

Not sure I saw the frame measurements. C-to-C or C-to-T?

Everyday run of the mill Ironman right? Not so fast. What makes this one unique? It still has the decals from this shop in Zushi, Japan where it was originally purchased. (I bought it off of the Norfolk, Va Craigslist) It has a different TT decal with no Ironman included, only one set of bottle bosses and...... a lugged fork that was not on the US market bikes.

I found this unusual colnago. At first I thought it was a colnago mexico ESA from the bad photos. On picking up the bike i noticed it was unusual. It has 4 ESA like crimps on the top tube and on the seat tube and 5 master like crimpd on the downtube. It has a nuovo mexico rear end (seat stay withcolnago stamp) with a colnago stamp on the chain stay with a small groove. It has a colnago stamp and nr 085 on the dropouts. The bottom bracket is unique in that it has the classic colnago mexico cut out but is double butted by the seat tube which is 1cm thinner than a corresponding Nuovo mezico seat tube. The seat post is around 26.8 also unusual size. the lugs are all correct for colnago but it is missing the clover on the downtube. My gut feeling is that it a very early prototype masters between 6 crimps ESA (top and seat tube 4 crimps) and 4 crimp master (5 crimp downtube).

This one was a dumpster find - a high tensile frame made in Japan. It is a twelve speed, low end Shimano equipped, with front caliper and rear disk brakes. It is a Masa 12. I've never seen one before or since. I have nearly the whole bike. I'm only missing the seat, front derailleur, and shifters. The RD was damaged either going in to the bin or coming out.



I wish the light was better in the photos. One day I'll put it together and see how well the Shimano "New Disk" works (I'm betting not well at all, or there would be more of them around).

Performing a resurrection here because the ebay gods recently smiled upon me and I became the next caretaker of this Paramount. Built it up kinda rando-ish. Not a great time of year for miles, did a few commutes on 'er, then just spun a little under 20mi yesterday. Trail snow was too deep, w/ice underneath, to ride and stay upright. So the ride was mostly on dry asphalt, but I decided to pose 'er in the wild anyway.




And while we're on unique/rare, this is a frame I built at a Proteus Framebuilding Class in '81. It's the only frame I've ever built, so it is literally and truly unique. That don't make it good, there's almost definitely a cold-brazed joint or two, and some pretty rough lug/finishing work, but unique it is.

My bike was custom-made by Glenn Erickson in 1993. It has Reynolds tubing, DuraAce all around, and hand-carved lugs.

I really would like to see another one in the wild. Most likely in Europe, I figure.
2004 model. Closest I've seen is in Google images. Some of them were mine.
Cinelli only confirmed the year and its place in the lineup that year.
No idea if XLR8R vs. XLR8R-2 vs. XLR8R-3 means anything, other than the TT on the "3" being more level.
The soft-touch finish bombed, creates a unique "patina" of its own.
So far, I've resisted anything with much gloss on it, seems to be a darker horse.

I've seen a couple very similar frames, high-gloss black, for sale on eBay.
No identification of mfg, just "Italy."

Currently, after finally getting the headset to tighten up (had star nuts inside a carbon steerer, not good):







Took 3 years to find the seat post.
