GAH! missed it by thiiiiiiss much!!!!
Oh, man. coulda shoulda woulda.........
I bid on an unused 120mm Nitto lugged quill stem on Ebay, and totally forgot about the whole "max bid" thing. Instead, I entered my "bid" at only a dollar or so over the other bidder.
As the seconds ticked away (with me as apparent high bidder), the bid jumped up, and I was unable to enter my max in time.
The $200 stem went to some lucky person for $105 including shipping
Oh, well, they can be found for $149 over at bicycleclassics.com ...........

Always snipe bid, at the maximum amount the item is worth to you. Ignore current bid level, that is often meaningless.

Sniping isn't neccesary but on items that are readily available it gets harder to assign a value.
If you know how much you would be willing to spend then 1 bid is all it take, the ebay system will make sure that the highest bid gets it, not the last bid before close.

Here is one I missed a few days ago: I bid $81 for a nice wheelset, exactly the same as the winning bid. I lost because in the case of a tie, the earlier bid wins. I could have bid $.01 more and won it! Oh well, there will be another one...
