Another Polishing Question

Pulled this Nitto Technomic stem out of a bike yesterday. It was shoved almost all the way in, and very difficult to get out. As you can see It was scratched up pretty good. Should I try to polish the scratches out, is it even possible. If I give this a shot, I'd start with wet & dry 400 grit, then work my way up. Good idea, bad idea, what do you think?

The deeper scratches won't polish out without removing a significant amount of material, but I'd probably do it anyway - shiny things are pretty.

** Edit - I should modify that to say that I'd polish it up, but I wouldn't attempt to remove the deeper scratches.

I'd remove the anodizing first with oven cleaner.
