Tweed Runners?
#51
I have not participated in a Tweed Run. If there were one that I could do right from my house, I suppose I would; but the closest so far have been NYC and Philly, which is too far to go for such silliness.
There's something about the Tweed Run that bothers me. When I go out and want to look reasonably presentable, I wear a tweed jacket; and my preferred mode of transportation is a bicycle; but tweed is not my idea of sensible biking clothing. The whole thing sounds like a weird kind of exhibition where I'd be embarrassed to be recognized.

I am trying to understand the tweed ride concept, but what sure is a good thing about it is that it stimulates cycling in countries that do not have a cycling tradition as say Denmark or Netherlands. I do not know whether tweed run could be as a success in NL. In anglosaksian countries cycling is also about making a statement or a way to express. Overhere everybody rides bicycles.

CVB, those are excellent pictures. Thank you for posting them. I'm glad it worked out well. Was it the Triangle area's first tweed ride?
I found that tweed is generally too warm for me. It certainly was in May. I've worn my tweed jacket on bike lately, but as a replacement for a winter coat, not a fall/spring jacket.

Glad you liked the pics. I can't claim any credit for them. I just thought folks here would enjoy seeing them. I believe that it was our first tweed ride. 200+ riders, which I was told is the same number that turned out for London's first.
As for whether tweed is sensible cycling clothing: no, not always. Whether this is some kind of retro-hip event: for some it clearly was. But either way, the ride got people out riding together AND it forced some thought about what actually is sensible cycling clothing. For me, sensible clothes are the clothes that will make the most sense for what I plan to achieve that day. If I'm riding 15 minutes to work in the office for 8 or 9 hours, I think my office clothes are sensible. I believe more people would ride if they looked at cycling that way. I think these events help people see that you don't have to look like Lance to ride.

Some people are never satisfied. If you don't want to wear tweed and ride a bike there isn't going to be anyone forcing you to. Stay home

I know that Travese City Mi has a tweed run on April 26th. I just wish they had one in Fall. April was a rough month for me. I was still recovering from a car accident I was in. Fact is I'm still recovering from it. I think by fall I might be able to ride again.
