Danish Porteur Rack

Hey Guys... Have you seen this newish porteur rack by a Danish firm:

https://copenhagenparts.com/

Kinda interesting with the "mounting system"...although the subsequent bar type will put quite a few people here off I think.

What do you think???

I think it looks kind of cool. I am a bit concerned about not having fork support though.

a work friend of mine has one of those integrated porteur rack/handlebar/stem combos. he likes it and i agree it looks pretty cool, but i don't like how high up it is placed.

Well, it would only work with a stem that has a faceplate, and I'd really be wary of how the bike would handle with weight up that high and only cantilevers off of the bars/stem.

It's gotta to be fantastically expensive... they don't quote a price up-front and it has "hipster-ish" people in the ads. I'm surprised there isn't a bottle opener and a 15mm wrench built into the friggin' thing. I love the photo of the kid with the horrible 'stache in the bush with a few logs on his rack... LOL I'm sure he used a bedazzled axe on his fakerjack expedition. Oh of course it comes in a wide selection of horrible colours.

This rack weighs 1.6kg, that's more than 3lbs. WTF? VO's stainless porteur rack only weighs 1.07kg. It's not quite as big, mind you, but at least you're left with usable handlebars after you install the rack.

I'm not sure how I'd like it on a vintage bike, but it would sure look great on a hipster build, don't you all think? I just showed it to my 22 year old son who lives in "Hipster Midtown" (and who rides a fixed gear as his main city transpo), and he was all over it. "Buy me that for Christmas, Dad!"

That doesn't seem like a particularly great value if ya ask me, but I did expect it to be priced higher. The Paul flat-rack is also 200$ and has similar weight capacity, but it doesn't leave you stuck with lame handlebars. Not that I'd buy either of them to begin with.

Thanks for saving me from having to write that. Did you notice that the packaging is just as important as the product? Apparently these hipsters are too cool for vowels.

I would not ride with a rack that high and mounted on the handlebars.

As for the price...
You can order any kind of rack you want, hand made to your specs, by Jonathan Gehman in Virginia for around $120-$150.

that's not at all expensive for a custom rack! does he do chrome plating? can he work with stainless steel and aluminum alloys?

As far as I understand, yes. Of course, for fancy stuff I expect the price would be higher. He is also currently in the process of setting up his own powdercoat studio (he previously used enamel paint), making a lot of colour choices possible.

Sorry. Upon reexamination, I discover that it holds /four/ LPs.

Being an expat Dane, and raised an inner-city kid, I should probably support a stylistic upstart like cphgn [sic] parts, but... More than doubting the utility of that rack, especially for an actual useful load of firewood, it might be other aspects that puts me off. Gears and empty country roads suits me better these days than hanging with my homeboys doing stoppies under the streetlamp.

I like Radiohead, though.

Ahem! As any hipster know, a 'stoppie' is a front wheel endo. Learned it myself 30 minutes ago when searching for a cool trick to accompany my rant.

I am confused by how it actually mounts. It looks like it totally replaces the handlebars, yes?

It looks like it would wreak havoc on the handling of a bicycle and lacks any serious carrying capacity.

I don't really understand the purpose of it to be honest. A rack that bulky should carry a lot more than an unsupported rack with sides that low can actually carry. Its looks make things look like its for a utility bike, but it just can't carry as much. I am not even sure I like the aesthetics that much.

the attachment to bike, and subsequent loads on the mount points and stem/headset are all wrong. Dumb idea
But I'm not a hipster

Radiohead had that one song which I like, Creep, but the more I hear it the more I realise what a pale immitation of a decent Keith Richards riff it has. So I don't really need that rack

Not sure that I see the Keith Richards comparison. Even the band has disowned and moved on from that song. There was a story in an interview that Jonny Greenwood was bored from recording so many takes of that song and that led he to hit those muted strings leading to the chorus... which obviously stuck. Radiohead has evolved and changed so much through the years.

This rack screams "form over function".

It looks good, and the design is clever.

I think there is certainly room for improvement, as the current design leaves A LOT to be desired IMHO. I would not buy one as it currently configured.

Just so everyone is clear...I wouldn't buy one at all...Just making conversation!

The only bike I want/need a front rack/basket for is the Retrovelo'd Rockhopper, and I would probably either build something myself or just go cheapo black Wald basket!

FWIW...
