Raleigh Superbe - Will you take this as a project?

Update...

Going to slide the bike to the trunk and bring it home! Time to restore this Superbe.

-----------------------------------------------

Now you've seen the picture and have an idea how bad it is currently. Will you bother to pick this up with a minimal price as your project?

nope. i wouldn't bother. it seems salvageable, but not worth the effort to make nice.

Bikes: A few bikes

I'd get it for the front hub and headlight

If I didn't have other projects, if it was the bike I wanted, and if I had the time for it then I think I would. It does look like it could be cleaned up pretty well, and there's something satisfying about taking a bike in that condition and bringing it back to life.

I'll disagree with the other two (depending on the "minimal price" of course): it seems a perfect bike to learn the intricacies of a 3-speed, and much of the damage looks cosmetic.....a lot of that rust will come off pretty easily. It certainly won't be showroom when you're done but I'd bet it would be quite serviceable.....Locally that bike (in clean but not restored condition) would fetch $250+.....

To part out, sure. Otherwise, I would pass.

The 23" frame is very desirable, and the rims actually look relatively rust free. It might be the kind of project that sits in my basement for two years, but I'd likely take it on.

Actually the frame size might be an issue as I am a tall dude. I always want try to get a bike like this and bring it back to life as my project. I know I have the time to do it (I mean I'll take my time ..) but not sure if I have the skills to do so.

Also according to it's owner, the light is not working right now due to rust has gotten into contacts? That's what he said.

Bikes: one of each

I'd do it if it weren't so far away. It's the tallest frame that the Superbe came in and it's got all the fixins. I'd buy the rack if it helps the deal. I sold a rack like that a while back for $15 US and the guy was really anxious to get the money in my hand. Now I'm looking at my green (and brown) Raleigh and wishing I'd saved it.
Good original grips, too.
And that seat is just exactly the right vintage for replacing with a Brooks B-66.

I'd do it.

My wife would kill me, though.

Yes, I like Raleigh 3-speeds and it doesn't look all that bad to me.

DO IT. It's the biggest frame they made for that style of bike. And it's really not in bad shape.

I'd do it if i wanted to finally do an oxalic acid bath project. Looks like the perfect candidate for a soak. After the soak, see what's left.

You don't state what the "minimum price" is, but I personally wouldn't hesitate if the price is indeed minimum. I bought a Sports in a little worse condition for $20, it had a Trygg dual leg kick stand; I'd pay more for a Superbe. Remember, Oxalic acid is your friend.

Around here you might get $200+ as is! I wish I had room to take it on.
If you get it you will post progress reports of course, and does anyone ever go begging for help on this forum?

I'd probably take it. At the very worst, it's got some interesting parts.

Yes. I'm sure it will clean up nicely, and make a great bike. Upgrade the headlight to LED.

I'd do it. Oxalic acid was made for vintage Raleighs (The All Steel Bicycle).

I am going to pick it up tomorrow so wish me luck. I am not sure if I can fix the generator and bring it back to life though.

Can you guys confirm if this is really a Superbe?
