Home Made Bike Stands
Many of us have quite a few bikes. Storing these so they don't fall over or just leaning against another bike is not a real good idea. Buying store bought storage units can get pricey in a hurry. So I'd like to know if anyone has made some home made bike stands/storage units. These can be as simple as wooden units where the front wheel is placed between to 2X6's to hold the bike upright.
Does anyone have any units that can be made at home? If yes, would be willing to share what you did?
Thanks in advance for any information shared.

Al,
I've picked up a bunch of different racks, used, from CL and Wal-Mart's clearance section, so my garage is a mix of them.
I plan to build one this summer out of PVC to store them side-by-side, facing alternating directions.
Like you, I need the floor space and worry about storage damage. Given your basement's layout, I'm still thinking floor storage.
My garage is much smaller, but has 14' ceilings, so I've got to think more vertically.

These cost me less than $5 to construct.
Materials:
(2) 16" 2x4's
(3) 19" 2x4's
(4) 34" Deck Railing slats
(20) 2-1/2" Deck Screws
Cordless drill w/ No.2 Phillips bit
Miter saw
Tape Measure
1/8" drill bit
A big clamp as shown.
Screw (2) 16" and (2) 19" 2x4's together with (8) screws to create the base.
Cut slats to 34" lengths.
Assemble the slats to the (19") top-rail, with 2-1/4" spacing between them.
Pre-drill 2 base-mounting holes in the slats to avert splitting the slats.
Secure the slat-top-rail assembly to the base.
Done.
(You can vary the lengths to add additional bikes, or just place them side-by-side.)

I made a pvc bike rack from these instructions My suggestion is to buy some PVC snips, because there are a lot of pieces to cut (It took me nearly 2 hrs just to cut the pvc pieces).
here's a photo of it in use:

Outstanding responses. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

Riding like its 1990
I just mounted a 2x4 to the wall and have a bunch of hooks. Bikes hang alternately and I hang wheels in between them. Tires and spares can also be hung at a lower level. Nothing innovative or fancy but it works for my small garage.
A neighbor has hooks on the ceiling spaced to hang his bikes from the stem and saddle. The wheels hang down to shoulder level but a regular sized car can easily park under them. Not sure if I'll try it but I think about it sometimes. It'd use all the vertical space above the car's footprint and give me back wall and walking space on the sides.
