I was just pointing to the s# on the BB. Did you try the bolt and washer tip on the sheldon site? https://www.sheldonbrown.com/tooltips/bbcups.html
I don't hink a punch will help much. Those fixed cups really get locked in.

Yeah I'm not terribly interested in hammering the BB. I'm going to the hardware store in a min. will post after I try this.

Put on the Benotto decals. Next is the clear coat.

I've been contemplating getting the new SA 2-speed kickback hub with coaster break. I really don't want to run too many cables. If I can get multiple gears and breaks with no cables that would be ideal.

Anyhow, here are some pics. It's not a professional paint job but neither is the frame construction. Did 5 coats and sanded with a finer grit sandpaper with each coat. It's perfect for what I envisioned.

Hope ya dig. (Let me know if the pics are too big, I will resize)

So I've decided to switch up a few things and go with the new Sturmey Archer S2C hub. Link
From Sturmey Archer site:

Specs for 162mm Axle

• Hub Shell Material - 6061 Aluminum
• Axle Diameter - 13/32” Slotted
• Axle Length - 162mm
•Over Locknut Dimension - 116mm - shouldn't be a problem
• Right Axle Protrusion Length - 23mm
• Left Axle Protrusion Length - 23mm
• Spoke Holes - 36
• Pitch Circle Diameter - 67mm
• Center to Flange Right - 26.9mm
• Center to Flange Left - 29.7mm
• Flange Width - 53mm
• Spoke Compatibility - 13g or 14g
• Sprocket Teeth - 13T through 22T
• Chain Line: 1/8” Flat 43mm
• Chain Line: 1/8” Dished 41.2mm, 44.8mm
• Chain Line: 3/32” Flat 42.6mm, 43.4mm
• Chain Line: 3/32” Dished 41.1mm, 44.9mm

• Weight - 1400g

Gear Ratio

• Overall Range - 138%
• Gear 1 - 100% Direct Drive
• Gear 2 - 138% (+)38% (Gear 1 + 38%)

I'll next need to figure out the spoke length and decide on the rims I'm going with. Any suggestions on rims and spokes?

I just downloaded the spocalc .xls and will post the data when the hub arrives.

hi def pics as soon as it arrives!

It just arrived! I took a few shots of the unpacking.

Box contents. Came with 18t cog. I may go with a different cog once I figure out the ratio I want.

Since I'm going with a track crank I'll need a different size spindle. Anyone know where I could get one?

Thanks

What sort of bars are you thinking? This could look great with some porteurs(white tape) and a rack!

Almost a shame you went for a coaster brake hub though... Reverse bar end levers would have been my pick. Something about Porteurs with reverse brake levers just looks so RIGHT to me.

Well this is still sort of up in the air. Great idea with the porters. Although I don't think it's in the vision I've had for this build. Although, I really want to do my next build with porteurs, deep, dark blue frame, Brooks B17 Aged saddle, brown bar tap, chrome touches.

Anyhow I was thinking for this drop bars, risers or maybe bullhorns. Not sure yet but prob drops.

I went with the coaster hub because I was curious how it rode but mainly because I want to keep this very minimal with no cables. However, I'm thinking a front brake may be smart since I live in an urban area.

Geez I'm already thinking about my next project! I barely have room for this one.

I must say, the coffee table + cutouts setup you have on the previous page is a brilliant space saver for your apartment! If you ever get a bigger place and feel like parting with it, let me know! We live in the same city, so I'm sure a pick up could be arranged.

haha thanks. I was really just looking for a reason to use my new saw. I'll keep you in mind when I decided to get rid of it.

I think it's an actual Benotto. This guy did one that looks like the same year as mine, 1966.

[UPDATE]

Finally, I've been able to get some parts for this build. I started with a vision for what this old frame was going to look like when finished but I've changed things up a bit.

Just got in the mail:

Soma 456 Track Bar - 25.4mm x 46cm - nice and wide. They look great out of the box.
Velo Orange Brake Hanger
Velo Orange Threadless Stem Adapter
Velo Orange Threadless Stem, 26.0 +/- 17deg, 90mm Length
Velo Orange Gran Cru 1" sealed bearing Headset, mirror finish
Nitto bar shims for changing out bars. I plan on grabbing these pretty soon the grab groceries.

The Frame is currently at the LBS for installation of the headset since I don't have a headset clamp/press. Also, the fork that I just painted is bent so the owner (from CK Cycles, great guy) said he'd look for a nice fork that would fit my parts. Can't wait until I see what he finds (hoping for a chrome Tange fork with a small rake or a track fork but hey.).

Don't have pics of the headset yet will post later.

The bar tape was challenging. I just made sure to pull the bar tape taught while wrapping. From the looks of it I think it's obvious that it was my third time.

Going to lace up the rear Sturmey Archer S2C and front Phil Wood high flange hubs to Mavic Open Pro rims as soon as they come in the mail. Pics to follow.

I hate the black fork. It is going to change

Phil Wood High Flange 32H Hub just came in. My GF and I found it very photogenic.

The guy at the bike shop found it a little annoying that I wanted help figuring out what size spokes to use. He kept insisting that he just do it himself. Wants to charge $30 per wheel build, which I thought was pretty decent. But, I'm still interested in doing myself.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a great thread/blog on wheel building? Better yet a video?

Coming together wonderfully. I agree that the black fork look out of place. Even blue, matching the decals would have worked better.
Those photos of the Phil hub are nicely composed. Would make a great desktop background in high res.

Sheldon's page on lacing is a good start. For other patterns, there is a great site (I don't recall the url at the moment) with a lot of explanation and suggestions on lacing. Google will find it easily.

Mavic Open Pros just came in. I'm doing a 36H for the rear S2C hub and 32H for the front Phil hub.

Thanks WNG. I may decide to paint the fork or go with a chrome fork. The budget is getting a little tight down the home stretch here. I'm pretty annoyed at the LBS (and myself for leaving it there). He was nice enough for putting a fork on for me but he didn't install the VO headset that I looked so hard for and finally found. His reasoning was that it didn't fit the fork. Why wouldn't he give me a buzz to talk it over. I would've waited and looked around for a fork that fit.

I'll check out the SB site. Will post results of my research around the web.

BTW - If you pm me your email I'll send you the RAW hi rez files of that shoot. They did come out nice. I have a photo dump over at flickr also.

Darn, too bad about the headset! There's been a number of posts of LBS mishaps lately. Can't blame you for wanting to build your own wheels. It's a rewarding experience anyway. You'll either love it or loathe it.
PM will be sent...thanks for the cool photos!

So much sense and good advice contained in one paragraph Wogster, sounds like hard-won experience! Thanks for sharing.

I've essentially followed that advice throughout this thread. This is not a high end frame at all and I feel like since I'm going to build this I might as well do it right. With decent components. Besides if I want to get rid of the frame and get something nicer (Colnago one day) then I'll have decent components for it.

Thanks wogster.
