Superb Superbe

1969 Raleigh Superbe, owned by a forum member. Just finished a pretty intensive clean-up of it:

Obligatory fork lock picture:

Enjoy!

hmmm, and I was going to comment that Kurt should have swept off the leaves from the driveway before snapping those pictures...

Cool bike, I've never seen that locking fork thing before, interesting.

You have to remember, Scott has been tainted by a Raleigh appreciation.

Beautiful Superbe! And I commend your use of a friction shifter mounted to the top tube. Looks great and easy to use. I really want to try that now.

As a matter of fact, both levers are indexing and original SA components. Hub is an S5 w/bellcrank.

Only non-original bits are the tires, tubes, brake pads, and brake cables; pedals were also swapped out for post-'73 Union-made Raleigh rubberblocks.

It's remarkable to find those top tube levers intact as the plastic they're made from seems to have been inspired by Simplex Delrin.

Bikes: Mostly English - predominantly Raleighs

Honestly, I was thinking it might be this:

The one depicted is rather nice too. One of these years I need to get off my duff and make mine look worthy.

Pretty much the same stuff, but these have held up well:

Cables are originals as well, and work flawlessly, hence why we're leaving them in for the meantime.

There used to be a '69 Superbe, 23" frame size, in the neighborhood.

I have one of those modern 1980s Superbes. It lives in Atlanta at my nephew's house waiting for me to visit. It needs to be ridden more and I promise to take pictures the next time I go.

I was going to ask for a close up of the shifters. Thanks!

Where is the indexing mechanism? They look much like any friction shifter.

Nice!! Wonder if they ever made any for short people? Everyone I've seen is too tall, 30+ stand over.

Pastor Bob, if that ever decides to move north to a new home, I have a perfect group set for it!!

Probably a ball bearing rolling into a groove. Trust me, the indexing is extremely vague. Nevertheless, it works.

Smallest Superbes were made in 21", I believe. This '69 is an example of one. You'd probably be better off with one of the smaller, silver, men's 19.5's from 1973-6 (IIRC) and fitting it out with Superbe bits.

Great looking bike. Give Manny my regards.
I met him at NAHBS last year, very smart guy.

The bike is cool in so many ways, gadgets and overall.

I'm not quite next door, but I have a '66 in 23". It's pretty solid for being as old as me, especially the chrome. I'm the furthest thing from an expert, but I think it's all original but the tires, and possibly missing a rack.

Very pretty. Definitely not the local example.

Is that an original AW hub? I don't have any pre-1969 catalogs to know what the Superbe was running at the time. I know the '64s were a very interesting, two-tone example with green metallic Bluemels fenders; worked on one once. I've never seen one photographed online.
