Old Norman: what to do?
The co-op I volunteer at has an old dusty Norman sitting around. The donor says he picked it up in England quite a while ago and it was sitting in his basement ever since.
Seems like it might be quite a project to restore it.
How old is it? What would you do with it?

I'd restore it. I love that pinstriping!

Check for a date code on the rear hub. Have to say it... is the fork bent? Pretty sweet bike though, I like the decals.

How much is it worth to you? Time, money, wrenching......
Lot's of patina there to protect. My preference is to make it cheaply ride-able then evaluate the frame/components ... (Is the fork bent?, etc).

Restoring the older stuff is often times challenging but certainly worth it, in my opinion.
Nice bike.

Please show better photos of the decals, I've never seen those before! Is there a model name on the seat tube? Judging by the color, I'm wondering of this is their Club Sports model. The brochure page below is from their 1950 catalog.
Are the wheels/tires 26 x 1 1/4, or 26 x 1 3/8?
What's the serial number? (right side, lower head lug)
What's the date code on the rear hub (early 50's, I'm thinking)
If you ditch the rack, send it to me. My Norman needs one like that.

So that bike came with a flip-flop hub or you could upgrade to a SA 3 or 4 speed? Looks like the one pictured had upgraded metal fenders.

Gerv,
Yeah, not great photos, but they go along with my suspicions so far: Definitely the early 50's Norman head badge; and solid fork ends (i.e. forged dropouts) not the 'smashed' variety found on cheaper bikes. I'll wager yours has a 26.4 mm seat post, i.e. pretty good tubing, much thinner stuff than found on a Raleigh Sports (for example). So far, I'm thinking it's the Norman "Club Sports" model. Your handlebar, by the way, is the "allrounder" bend; could be original, or not. The brake levers don't really look original, but it's pretty hard to tell.
Oh, man, Gnome! I forgot you're in Christchurch! How's it going, down there?
"Shaken, not stirred." Hmm... sounds familiar... two olives, please!

looks like the rims are the 26 x 1 1/4 from the photos. they look a bit skinny for the regular 26 x 1 3/8 wheels.
in response to rhm. I'm ok, my family are ok, my house and the bikes are all ok.
