"Flower" shaped headset locknuts?

Do I need a special tool?

Instead of standard, flat-sided hexagonal locknuts, the headset on my '86 Centurion Ironman has nuts with concave sides and rounded corners. Reminds me of a flower.

Do I need a special tool for this headset, and if so, where do I find it?

TIA.

Sounds like the Shimano 600 headset lock-nut. Yeah - there's a special tool for it. the one and only time I ever fooled with one, I had success with a thickly folded rag and channel-lock pliers. I wouldn't recommend that method, though.....

Looks like this?

Yes? Then you need this:

Find it, here:

yes you do. I believe that is a 600 EX or a copy cat. try you lbs maybe they will loan you theirs or perhaps someone here will.

I am not sure if a standard 31,32, 32 wrench will work. if you just want to take it off channellocks will certainly do the job

Yes, that looks right. Bike came with Shimano 600 EX, so it makes sense.

I've got a set of those wrenches for sale in the For Sale forum, under "Even More NOS and NIB Goodies."

I was going to post the link, but it looked like randyjawa claimed them.

...and as previously mentioned, standard headset wrenches work fine on 'em. Just proceed with caution - they're aluminum, and the wrenches are steel.

Bikes: 1986 Alan Record Carbonio, 1985 Vitus Plus Carbone 7, 1984 Peugeot PSV, 1972 Line Seeker, 1986(est.) Medici Aerodynamic (Project), 1985(est.) Peugeot PY10FC

Ran into something similar last month when I recieved the JPR headset pictured from a seller in France.

I actually got the special wrench pictured in the mail before I recieved the headset. The seller was really nice enough to send it after he realized that he forgot to include in in the box with the headset, I was not expecting the wrench as most people lose these things, so I was planning on using a small strap wrench with a reinforced rubber strap to install it, which I think would work with most other headsets if you lose their proprietary wrenches.
Surprised Shimano did this too, I thought only the French would require special wrenches for their components.

The regular thin 32mm wrench on the adjustable cup, paired with a nice thick adjustable wrench for the top nut helps keep everything from slipping.
