Mid-60's Kay archtop with a period Olson Radio pickup added by some previous owner. Pickguard gone AWOL sometime in the past....no volume control for the pickup....amp control. Top's lost a little arch but still sounds amazingly good for probably a $20 guitar new.

None of my "vintage" guitars are fancy. Here's a late '60s or perhaps early '70s bass that has never had a name. From it's details it looks like Japanese instruments that were often branded Teisco in the US, and a Google Image search finds a slightly similar model sold under the Marlin nameplate in the UK.

As someone said up-thread, guitars like these are the equivalent of gas-crisis gas-pipe bikes, but that doesn't mean they can't have their charm.

I got this bass in trade in the early 80s from Dean Seal who played bass in my band in trade for another cheapo bass that I had that he had taken a liking to. A year or so back I decided to play more bass and actually began to use it. Funny thing: it actually sounds pretty good. The pickups are a little hotter than a Fender Jazz bass and their position gives it a fairly warm sound.

Paid $75 for this amazing German made classical guitar. I have researched the logo, haven't found much info. I was doing a job at a rich person's house, and it was sitting in the living room with two broken strings. I offered $50, she said $100, $75 took it home. A steal. That's what I had paid 20 years earlier for a cheap Japanese classical guitar, and this one would be comfortable on a big stage.




Martin D-18. A fairly ordinary Martin from the lower end of their catalog, but it's 50+ years old.

I also have a Les Paul and an American 50-year Anniversary Stratocaster, but they are not that old.





Made an offer to a guy for his Gibson ES-125 wrapped in a plastic garbage bag and leaning against the garage wall. He declined, then he said, "But you can have the amp." It was a better find than the axe. You can GET a Gibson.

This flawless 60 year old Danelectro had a fitted cover, so I hadn't noticed it. Later, my friend who did amplifier repair for big time rock bands rebuilt it, replacing every component with the highest quality of that part.

You can turn it up all the way with nothing plugged in. NO hum or buzz or any evidence it is even on. Loaned it to a friend who is a studio guitarist. Had to demand it back, it's his favorite amplifier. All 15 watts of R&R power.

Foreground: C. Bruno parlor guitar, I'd guess it's at least a century old, perhaps a few decades more than that. It was given to me about 1980 by a friend of mine, actually a rather famous punk rock drummer, who had trash picked it somewhere in Chevy Chase, D.C. It was broken at the tuning pegs. It's sitting on a chair I trash picked in West Philadelphia.

Background: plywood bass that I pulled from a New Jersey dumpster just a few years ago. I'd guess it's from the 70's. Pretty good bass at an excellent price! I had to reset the neck and fit a new bridge, but I haven't yet replaced the strings (). It's leaning on a book case I put together from chestnut cabinetry I trash picked in West Philadelphia.

Hiding behind the chair: an off-topic L-Cheapo five string electric bass.

Got it for 50% off the asking price since it was the third day of the sale.



Heard somthing loose inside and pulled all this stuff out of it (including the footswitch and a band promo card)

I have a 1971 D-25, mahogany top, bought new from the music store on Mass Ave, Central Square. (Sadly it doesn't get much use. My love is the harmonica. Old ones are curios.)

Do you mean Central Sales? I bought my first guitar there, an SG cheapo copy for $52.00 back in 1977. Or, perhaps, you mean Sandy's Music, which is (was?) on the way to Harvard Sq? Central Sales now has a shop right before you get into Porter. I forget the name, but you'll see it. I bought an electric bass there in 1993.
Cambridge Music was in Porter Square, right beside Mouradian Bros (custom and high-end electric basses). Mouradian did some work on both my basses. It was actually one of the few times that I had been into Cambridge Music.
I don't even play guitar anymore. The only thing I play (and that is mostly for my vegetables in my garden) is a native american flute.

One of these days I'll get a decent acoustic. Back when I had the money, and just a little inclination- checking out the Martin, Gibsons and Guilds- it struck me that I liked the sound of the ones from the 'lowers end of the catalogs,' and actually didn't like the HD28 or J200... which confused me.

And the Danelectro... I had one of the 2 6L6 "tuck in the back of the cabinet" with a single 15. Didn't like the way it sounded thru the 15- but it ruled with a 2x12. Where a Bassman would get all compressy around 6- this thing had less gain and would stay "open" sounding to 9. I sold that one to a studio.

I think there's something about the less expensive combos. My Gibson Falcon (19w) feels inexpensive compared to a Super or Deluxe or even a Princeton- but IMO it sounds better- and my guess is that thinner, lighter cabinet and baffle. But trust me, I won't kick a Deluxe Reverb out of bed for eating crackers.

I don't think Central Sales was the name of the place but I could easily be wrong. (45 years and a severe head injury later.) Funny, I recall it being very close to LifeCycle where I worked and raced out of a few years later though I never was aware of the two at the same time. (Very, very different times my life.)

This would be best qualified as a KOF: 2014 Gibson Thunderbird bass in Heritage Cherry. Like all good retro-grouches. I removed all of the black "componentry" and replaced it with silver/chrome.

I just love picking up a twelve string guitar and playing my usual tired licks on it, actually sounds fresh for a minute or two... I can play a lot like Leadbelly, though of course you are right to ask, why...?

He plays and has maybe 6 guitars. Last time I visited he said "i have something for you" and sent me home with this because he "hadn't played it in a year or more". Ok. Apparently a friend of his had given it to him.

It reminded me that he'd always had a 12 string around when I was a kid and I asked him what'd become of it. He ran down to the basement (It rivals Neals basement if Neal was a wood worker/wine maker and computer guy) and came back with this and some story about a cat jumping on it? The story didn't add up but I've learned when to ask questions...
