[edit] ok, scratch the Turtles. Apparently they didn't write most of their own songs; I just looked it up. I found out a couple of their tunes were penned by Warren Zevon, which is pretty cool I think.

I saw Neil Young a few months ago, pretty good solo show. The opening performer was apparently sick, so an unannounced substitute was called in - Allen Toussaint! I could have gone home happy after just his performance, he was fantastic...

Just bought ZZTop tickets for their show in October..... ouch. They weren't cheap - $135/ea by the time Ticketmaster had their way with me. Could have been worse, though - Steely Dan was getting $235.

i hate big expensive arena concerts.

I saw that Heavy Weather/Black Market tour in '77 in a small University Hall. Jaco was on another planet. What a band and what a loss. Looking at that video now, it's hard to picture how much they influenced jazz in their day.

On bad concept albums: I like Ween's the Mollusk a lot.

On Tegan and Sarah: Sure, nothing to be embarrassed about. I like a few of their songs I suppose... but am a much bigger fan of Jenny Lewis.

On Sonic Youth: I like them a lot. Most people seem to hate the experimental jet set album but it's one of my favorites. I liked Rather Ripped a lot too. The eternal was just ok.

I really dig Jenny Lewis...also really enjoy Neko Case.

Me, too. That's why I never go to them. This is a very small venue, and the seats go fast. The $235 Steely Dan seats are all gone - now it's auction/high bidder time.

Speaking of concept albums, I dusted off my bootleg from Genesis' '75 British tour, "Awed Man Out"...

Really? just replaying all the Turtles' hits I can think of in my head, I can think of a couple songs by Bonner & Gordon, one by Gene Clark of the Byrds, one by Dylan... but I can't think of any by Warren Zevon. The Turtles did an album called Turtle Soup, on which they wrote all the songs and brought Ray Davies in as producer, which made for an interesting album but no great hits.

Warren Zevon had a great song in the psychedelic period called "Follow Me," recorded by a duo called Lyme and Cybelle. Lyme was Zevon, but I forget Cybelle's real name. I love that song.

Zevon was a band leader for the turtles as I recall and wrote arrangements.

Getting my early Zevon confused...it was The Everly Brothers he was a band leader and arranger for...he wrote a few songs for the turtles.

Turtles had some great stuff, but I think their main strength was Howard Kaylan's voice. Just one of the nicest voices in the business.

Thinking about the best shows I've ever seen, I guess I should tell about the time I saw Ronnie Lane. This was in '89 or '90. He had an all-Texan band that included an accordion player, and they had a very American sound, kinda straight-ahead-country but with all the county trappings stripped away, if that makes any sense. They played a couple songs, and they cooked pretty hot, but of course we're all wondering, where's Ronnie? Then someone brought a little wooden chair, one of the restaurant chairs all the audience was sitting on, up on stage. And then someone carried Ronnie up, and put him on the chair. I guess Ronnie weighed like 80 or 90 pounds by this time, he was a little guy to begin with and he'd been fighting MS for over ten years and MS was winning. So for the next hour or so, Ronnie traded vocals with his band mates, joked with the audience, sang his heart out when he could, and let someone else sing when he needed a rest. But I swear, he never stopped smiling. He looked like the happiest guy in the world. Someone requested Itchycoo Park, and they blew that song away. I requested Lazy Sunday, and Ronnie said something to the effect of no, can't do that without Stevie. I knew the Small Faces records pretty well, but not his later stuff, so didn't know most of the songs they played, but it was wonderful. My buddy Mark had brought his guitar, which had already been signed by Arlo Guthrie and Steven Stills and I don't remember who else, and he held it up as they were carrying Ronnie off stage again, still smiling ear to ear, shaking hands with everyone. So Ronnie stopped and signed Mark's guitar and hung out with us for a moment. Everyone in that club was coming up and shaking Ronnie's hand, congratulating him on a brilliant show, wishing him well... it took almost as long to get off stage than he's been on stage.

Yet another rock idol in a car commercial - I saw a Chrysler commercial with a shot of an Iggy Pop album cover and "No Fun" playing in the background. Odd choice of a song to sell cars...

Welcome to why I haven't been to a concert of any kind since the '90's. Actually, I got really spoiled during my Erie years (68-77). I was good friends with two of the biggest groupies in the Buffalo/Cleveland circuit. I had the car, they had the contacts. We'd hit a concert, pay general admission, the girls would connect up with whoever was the person in charge, and I spent the concert backstage, or standing right in front of the stage (ahead of the security line, if there was one), backstage party afterwards, drive home 0500 next morning coming down off whatever I was given that night. Hit the '80's and suddenly I'm paying my money and sitting/standing in the same area as all the rest of the punters. Got a couple of good concerts, but for the most part it was sooo . . . . . ordinary.

Once prices started to skyrocket, I quit going. Period.

Nasty admission. I haven't bought any music since 1999. I've downloaded a few .mp3's, but essentially my music listening ended with the turn of the century. No interest anymore.

I think you're talking the Chrysler 300 commercial. I though the music fit nicely. It helped that, for the life of me, I couldn't remember the name of the song.

I think they just played the intro before the vocals, but you're right, that song is pretty appropriate

What's amazing to me is that even now, Iggy sounds ahead of his time...like everything else will catch up in another 10 years.
