I played in a alternative band in the 80's in Philly and Dean from Ween used to hang around all the time. Played at the Khyber pass about a zillion times as well. Just saw Mike Watt at the North Starr. Good, but man I miss the minutemen!

Saw the Surfers at least 3 times, Dead Milkmen, Chuck Mangione, Steve Ray Vaughn, Violent Fems, sheesh, too many to list. Worst show experience, being talked into walking to see the Cult open for Metalic, the venue was too far away, listened to the entire Cult set while walking through the woods only to arrive in time For Metalica to set up. Metalica was good, I just wasn't as into them. Worst show experience I actually saw.. the Cure on the Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me tour. Bad sound in our seat location, just an unbearable mix. Best show still might be the BH Surfers with the setting fire to the cymbals, naked dancing girl and sex change operation on the big projector screen. Just a singular moment of being so young and alive.

Opened for the Surfers on that tour in Richmond Virginia, quite a show! People were fainting when that movie was playing........

My mother once told me she was friends with Steve Miller in high school. Don't know about that statement's veracity, but he is from around me.

Best show I ever saw: Fishbone. Opening band were Living Color. Fishbone played for like 3 hours in this tiny theater. Amazing.

Second best: INXS back in 1987.

I made the mistake of listening to Steely Dan while working the other day, you know just to give them a fair shake with fresh ears. Now Kid Charlemagne is stuck in my head along with memories of roller skating, dirt bikes and the Captain & Tenile variety show with that skit about the watermelon.

Some of it seems like the musical hook comes in the middle of the verse and then it just leaves you hanging out for a while before they start in again.

Khyber isn't a venue anymore...it seems so unnatural. Especially since Dobbs is back. North Star is an awesome venue, I didn't know Watts was up here. Minutemen were fantastic.

Can't You See is a great song.

RE: Marshall Tucker Band - "Desert Skies", for the win. For some reason, I can't hear that tune enough.

i will admit that there is one eagles song I can stomach. 7 Bridges Road. But its mostly because it sounds like a Crosby, Stills and Nash tune. Those guys still sound good.

I thought Steely Dan sounded old when it was new. But now that I'm feeling older, it is sounding newer. I still like cutting edge sounds. I remember when the pierced dude kinda chuckled when I bought the Radiohead "OK Computer" CD which seems aeons ago. I still like my 70's blues-based rock which is my wheelhouse. But, I hate stale music; and I hate listening to the same things over and over. I think the world has passed us and makes better music then we hear today on lame-ass radio. Just another sign that this country is on a retrograde path. I want to listen to what the kids are listening to.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Sonic Youth, but I've got to give them a nod too. Saw them play the Daydream Nation album from start to finish which was awesome. Big fan of Pavement, too.

Sonic Youth is another one of those bands I always thought was more interesting than they were any good. Day Dream Nation has some good tracks, Experimental Jet Set has some good tracks...but they have a lot of garbage out there too.

Pavement have two wonderful albums...Slanted and Enchanted and Brighten the Corners.

No one has mentioned how amazing Television and Jonathan Richman/Modern Lovers were. Also...no mentioned of Lou Reed or Iggy Pop...or even Bowie!

Never forget the look on my mother's face when I hauled home the original vinyl copy of Bowie's- Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.

She's a classically trained pianist and that darn near killed her.

I LOVE T. Rex...that mid-70s glam is one of my favorite periods of music...Roxy Music and Mott the Hoople can be added in as well. Then Queen ruined it

I've seen the Milkmen a few times also, always a fantastic and fun show. Also saw the Surfers on the "Psychic, Powerless.." tour in the Cameo theater on Miami Beach, an old decrepit theater converted into a nightclub. I was keeping one eye on the emergency exit when Gibby was doing the fireball thing and the excess lighter fluid was setting the stage on fire. The other eye was on the girl of course...

I saw FZ in Portland ME in the late 90's with a huge band, still pretty enjoyable. Some of the banter that went on during that show made it into one of the "You can't do that on Stage" recordings. I also caught "The Grandmothers" a while back, they were composed of Jimmy Carl Black, Bunk Gardner, Don Preston, Napoleon Murphy Brock, et al. Would have been great without the Zappa look-alike they recruited, I thought that was a bit too much. It was pretty cool to see "Call any Vegetable" performed live, but we walked out midway through the show.

Had all of the MTB in vinyl LP's. My wife sold them for $1 each during a garage sale. I've reminded her of that event each spring for the last 15 years.

De La Soul, Diggable Planets, Public Enemy...there was good hip hop.

Traveling Wilburys for the win. There. I said it. Brought in the Supergroup. But how can you know one of the first bands to feature 4 lead guitar players?


I opened for Marty Stuart once. The guy seemed hammered, showed up over 45 minutes late on stage. They kept sending a roadie out to tune all the instruments, one at a time. Luckily it was my 21st birthday and the shows were at a winery.

I like Mos Def quite a bit. His New Danger album is a nice mix of styles.
