I saw Kansas in 1999 at the Sussex County Vo-Tech auditorium.

They played 40 minutes of music nobody wanted to hear, followed by "Point of No Return" and then left the stage. When the crowd was sufficiently pissed that they hadn't played either of the only two songs they came to hear the Band came out and played "Dust in the Wind" ....and left the stage AGAIN. The auditorium waited in near silence for them to come back out and finally play "Carry on my Wayward Son"....it wasn't an Encore...it was just "OK guys, come on out and hurry up and play the damn song so we can all go home already"...I'm pretty sure its not considered an Encore if nobody is cheering for you to come back out.

Worst show ever by far.

Good Call. I had been looking for band name not album name. I've sat and listened to the entire Days of Future Passed album before at work. I think it bothers my coworkers.

Then again, I also sit here and listen to Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside quite a bit too. Maybe I'm just weird.

I saw Kansas once many years ago. I don't remember it being as bad as you describe.

Worst show I've ever seen.... Dave Matthew's Band. After the shooting at my school (Virginia Tech) we had a concert thing the next semester. Dave Matthews showed up and proceeded to do the most boring show I've ever seen in my life. Had I paid to see it, I would've been pissed. John Mayer, on the other hand, came out and did a blues type show and was awesome. Even Nas put dave matthews to shame.

Fake encores are a pet peeve of mine. The problem is, bands are expected to do the encore, but venues have them booked for specific times. It's more or less impossible to play a real encore at most venues larger than a club in this day and age. I'd honestly rather you just play your set and not play around with the encore stuff. It's just so obvious...the lights haven't gone out and everyone knows you're going to finish with a bang.

When Frank Black was last on tour, sometimes he'd play outside the venue...in a park. THAT'S AN ENCORE!

How about the spaghetti western sounds of Calexico? One of my favorite shows of all time.

I went and saw them last summer at the Beacon...it was really great. If you haven't been in the last couple of years, you really should...they completely restored the interior of the theater and it looks amazing now. Sound seems to have improved as well.

I've seen some brutally awful shows. I guess it's not fair to list shows where I didn't like the band to begin with (Pat Metheny). But I have to say, the best shows were the ones where I had good seats. The closer I've been to the front of the stage, the better the show. So the time I saw the Dead, all the way at the other end of the Capitol Center, I swear they sucked... but I was in no position to judge fairly.

It's been about 3-4 years since I've seen them live...how much are tickets?

Esoteric bands I saw/liked in the early 80's?

Pere Ubu, The Only Ones, Magazine, Replacements, Dead Kennedy's, Ultravox, Kraftwerk, PIL, David Sylvian, Specials, TSOL, DOA, The Tubes (world tour) Stranglers, Lydia Lunch, Cocteau Twins, Nick Cave and the Birthday Party etc. Lord knows how many I've forgotten. Adam Ant maybe...snort.

Bands from the 70's...too many, everybody.

I saw Cocteau Twins live as well...in DC...and I always hated them on album, but they were damn good live.

Sylvian was around a few years ago for a NY Dolls reunion...and even with half of them dead, it was still awesome.

Hoooboy. Lemme see... Kinks several times, Guess Who, Who, Muddy Waters, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Bo Diddley, Donovan, McGuinn & Hillman, the Band, Clapton, Stiff Little Fingers, Violent Femmes, Ramones, Blue Oyster Cult, Alvin Lee, Eurhythmics, Duran Duran.... my memory fails me. Not all of these were exactly by choice.

Dammit, I'm late to the party! oh well, I was pretty impressed with a lot of the posts.

NY Dolls (or what's left of em) are touring this summer as well.

For the Beacon Shows Steely Dan tix are $55-130. They're also playing at MuzikFest in Bethlehem PA in August and tix are 69/49 depending on where you sit.


best one I ever saw was Bela Fleck and The Flecktones at NJPAC. It was freakin surreal what with the acoustically perfect auditorium and all.

Cocteau twins did drone on those early EP's. OMD comes to mind as great live performers with boring vinyl at the time.

It was the birth of alternative/indie music. Lot's of crap of course but it changed the whole industry.

Bela Fleck...yes.

I saw the Seldom Scene several times in the Phil Rosenthal era. One time Ben Eldridge was out sick, and filling in on banjo was Bela Fleck. I'd never heard of him, but he seemed to know the material pretty well.

Other than Pixies (HUGE exception), Throwing Muses and Breeders, I could have done without pretty much every 4AD band on vinyl.

The first live show I ever saw was Three Dog Night. A girl was involved with that one - I wanted to see Leon Russell, but.....

Best live show? Pink Floyd - The Wall. Saw them at the L.A. Coliseum. It was a hell of a show. Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare was a lot of fun to be at, as well.

Worst live show? Led Zeppelin at the San Diego Civic. I'm a big LZ fan, but the show sucked. It was horrible.

I once saw George Thorogood and The Delaware Destroyers at Perkins Palace in Pasadena CA. His front band turned out to be Albert Collins and The Icebreakers. That man could PLAY.

I was never a Buddy Guy fan until I caught him live, sandwiched between Dr John and The Fabulous Thunderbirds. I've been a huge fan ever since. He is SO much better live than on any of the recordings I've heard of him.

Took the wife and daughter to see Lyle Lovett last summer - he's got a really tight band.

Pixies played Halifax 2 weeks ago but I can't do crowds any more. Small clubs only...unless, maybe if it was The Raconteurs (leaping time and space)

I would love to have seen most of those bands live! Some memorable shows I've attended: Buzzcocks, Bu**hole Surfers, the Descendants, Van Morisson, Dave Brubeck, Bad Brains, Leon Redbone, Morrissey, Elvis Costello, the B-52s...

I think the Dolls are on tour again, though I haven't heard the new album yet but I did enjoy One Day it Will Please us to Remember Even This.

I think the cool thing about The Dolls is that they know what they are. Sylvain is a smart, down to Earth guy and he knows what the fans want. He gives it to us and he doesn;t it take it seriously. How can he after Hot, Hot, Hot?

It's a fun nostalgia show which doesn't aim to be anything else...they show up ready to play and they play well.

I love this mindless wordfilter we have here. Filters out the word "****" but allows you to say "*****"

Actually, I filtered myself. I assume I'd get either B*******e Surfers or a temporary ban...

Oh yeah, I also saw the Revolting Cocks once.
