I'm sure the aesthetic value of a helmet lies largely in the eye of the beholder, but I was happy to find a cheap giro helmet that fits my humongous noggin and only vaguely resembles a space alien skull.

Giro Atlas II oversized helmet. I imagine the name is a clever twist on carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders. Unfortunately, it's been discontinued so eventually I'll have to find another helmet for humongous domes.

I don't know if most people know this, but if you have health insurance, they will generally cover the first $25 for a new helmet(no matter how ugly).

I have a modern Giro that makes me look like I am going fast.

Uhmmm.......the Gambler Soumy MC helmet is just way too much for me graphically.
What ever happened to nice clean designs we had just in the recent past like the one on my Dainese....

Grahics on MC helemts just got too wild with the gothic lettering, Paisleys, Monsters and cartoon themes
So glad I was still able to find this Bell Star 2 with more restrained graphics than what is usually out there:

I have worn this Schuberth German Fireman's helmet with the luminous shell while riding my brother's sidecar rig in the night:
. I think it had nice aesthetics, but just way too heavy for riding my bicycles. Maybe on an MTB it would look OK??

Nope. Yours is much cooler than the ATC.

How well does the leather clean? The inserts in my helmet come out and get washed when I get salt stains on them.

The ball0on like helmet is a new concept (prototype, I don't think it has reached production yet) for additional head protection designed as part of a safety clothing system for motorcycle/scooter riding. A lot of companies catering to motorcycling safety clothing like Dainese and Spidi (Mostly Italian MC safety clothing companies) have been coming up with these automatic CO2 deployed systems to complement their jackets and racing suits. A lanyard or in some instances an electronic G force sensor detects a crash situation and deploys these "air bags" to help further protect the rider from blunt force trauma one would experience in a crash. MotoGP riders are now using some of these systems that mostly protect teh upper torso, neck and head and the reviews so far have been encouraging.

We wear what reflects us.. The Soumy Gambler fits me to a tee. First, I was a professional gambler for no less than 35 years, and it suits my present riding style, along with way out roadracing suits..

The helmet now makes sense if you were a professional gambler as you noted.
I guess I always thought I was kinda devious like the devil on my Dainese helmets

btw, the Casco ATC is about $100 and has similar looks and leather interior:

That is a nice looking helmet. Not as cool as the expensive one, but more in my budget. Been looking for something that would work for around town without the pro racer look, but that would do for longer rides and touring.

I am wondering as well how the leather cleans, since my sweat dissolves shoes, paint and sunglasses. All my leather saddles are ok, but leather gloves don't last me very long. I usualy rinse my helmet after every ride to make it last longer.

Oh, and I currently use a Limar of some sort, great hemet, but it caught a beer bottle thrown by someone in a group of Harleys a few weeks ago and has a crack.

I know it must be nice and plush feeling but, is a leather interior the best thing to use in a helmet one would sweat like crazy in? Shouldn't they use a washable synthetic material instead? There is a synthetic leather called "Lorica" that supposedly breaths like the real stuff and I think will resis the damage that sweat can do to real leather. Maybe that's what they used in this Casco ATC helmet.

Robbie,

Are you the dude in the wife-beater T? Looks as if you are wearing a minimalist chopper helmet. Just enough to satisfy state laws requiring motorcycle lids.

I hadn't seen the Yakkay helmets before. I have to admit the oil skin covered one is a pretty sweet idea if one is commuting. I do laugh that all the model pictures are of women whose hair manages to fill in underneath the helmet. Otherwise, it probably looks a lot like wearing a clown proportioned hat.

I've seen some ladies wearing the Yakkay helmets around town. They do a decent job of hiding the fact that it's a helmet. They look dangerous to me, though. When you get in a wreck, don't you want the helmet's surface to be smooth so that if you are sliding along the ground the helmet won't get caught up on something? The fabric covers seem like they might catch up on something. But maybe the people wearing them aren't going fast enough for that to be a problem.

You know, iit's a shame none of the equestian helmets have bike versions. They look rather nice. I would think a helmet that would protect you on a horse would protect you on a bike. You're up higher and go pretty fast on a horse, right?

some online Casco retailers:

https://www.xc-elitesports.com/produc...0&currency=USD
https://www.velodromeshop.org.uk
https://www.50cycles.com/section.htm?section=casco
https://www.evanscycles.com/products/...elmet-ec021839

They're all UK because Casco doesn't sell in the USA. I bought my Attack helmet from a UK retailer through eBay.

Think if it as a cross between one of those and a circus peanut. That day, it hit about 90 degrees. The Hat has no vents. Basically, it's an upside down pot. Yes, you sweat. Padding is, shall we say, minimal. However, women do swoon as you go by.

By the way, that's roccobike with the Lemond Yellow Jersey, then my brother-in-law with an '87 Lemans RS, me on the non-C&V Ti, and lsdmt with the Zunow. It was a metric century, but I got lost and ended up doing about 85 miles.

Not to be too much of an annoying goody-goody or anything, but you should probably retire that helmet pretty soon. Plastic foam gets weak and brittle with age; a 1997 helmet isn't likely to do you much good. The manufacturers claim you should replace them after five years -- which does seem like a ploy to sell more helmets -- but after 14 years or so it's probably time to move on.
