I wear a Bern Berkeley (which I think is not bad for a stupid helmet aesthetics wise) both for bicycle riding and skiing. Bonus: I swear it styles my hair better than I can on my own (not joking). It is not bad looking and very light. I like that I can snap a visor in for summer time, and a fuzzy liner in it for winter riding and skiing. I wish I had a pic of it in winter duty, but I don't at the moment.

If you had used deodorant, the ladies would be just fine!

Why anyone would jump out of a perfectly good airplane without a non-com pushing you from behind is totally beyond me...

I know a guy who put himself through medical school and had enough money left over to buy a new car doing online poker. The dude is crazy smart with the maths. You don't want to play any board or card game with the guy because he always wins. Don't even THINK of playing Dominion with him. He cleans up every time.

The only game I can hope to beat him at is Tangoes -I can usually solve any tango puzzle as fast as I can lay the pieces down as the solution just "pops in my head." But this guy plays card games the same way and just can figure probablities and what cards work together and such like Rain Man. Some people are just goodd that kind of stuff. There is no way I'd ever make money gambling. I've got a perfectly good toilet at home to flush money down...

It's so weird how the poker stereotype went from a gristled, tough guy cowboy to a math geek. My best friend is a poker nerd and he's reasonably good, but not able to beat the MIT whizz kid on line players.

I think that is because while being able to bluff and BS is important, knowing the odds is pretty much "cheating" and over time is the only sure way to win. And knowing the odds is nothing but math...

Totally agree...I think it's also more than that...the online guys learn poker from position. They're very nuts and bolts players. They have a better feel as mechanics and I think that, in the long run, ends up more useful than the social skills.

I could probably be a good mechanical player if I put effort into it, but I don't have a feel for reading people, or hiding intent, when it comes to poker. Weird, because I'm very good at those things in other areas. I think a lot of poker comes down to comfort with risk and back up plans. I don't enjoy risk and I'm not able to blow off a big loss. I HATE losing money and am VERY conservative and risk adverse in general. That's a losing psychology for poker. I think a lot of the online whizz kids fundamentally view money as a game...as chips...where the older guys, and people like me, look at it as cash. I think a lot of them also have trustfunds...making them more willing to risk and play agressively. The online players are so hyper-agressive.

The online thing pretty much takes all the "reading" out of the game except for timing. You can't see the faces of the people you are playing with.

This guy I know, I've seen him play online poker in multiple windows playing multiple games while holding a conversation with a bunch of people in the room while joking and giving advice about other games that are going on -and on average winning pretty consistently on all of them. Granted, there are a lot of dummies online who lose money on online gambling to "take advantage of" and I bet there are quite a few poker players who are good enough to break even and make money when there is so much "dumb money" on the table.

I was thinking more along the lines of when the online guys play at a real table...and they usually do it quite well. I do think there is still an element of psychology and reading people even online. Noticing trends, noticing behaviors. I enjoy a friendly game with friends, but I'm just not good. I also generally dislike gambling, but the times when I'm in the poker room at a casino, I have learned a trick...

I go to the tackiest casino...I go to the cheapest table...late at night right after the bars close (this assumes I can stay awake that long) and grind it out against people when they're drunk or don't care as much. I've actually managed to be somewhat ahead in those environments!

Day-to-day I wear a Razor sk8r-style helmet; I feel conventional bike helmets don't protect the back of my head well enough and I also think the aero-tail offers too much leverage for obstacles to grab and then snap my neck like a twig. Sometimes I'll wear my burnt orange original Skid Lid (with the quatrefoil cutouts) from ca. 1981, because I think it makes me look like something from Tron.

I'll put it on and dash into the shop and say "Jamie! Come quick, the future needs you!" and then bone out. It's good for a laugh, if not for actual protection.

I know I should wear a helmet more, but honestly, once the snow's off the ground, I see less need for a brain-bucket. Still and all, any helmet, no matter how much it costs, is cheaper than a PET scan. And I personally know a few people (maybe myself included) who would not be here without the impact protection of a good helmet. Besides that, wearing goggles on their own just looks dumb.

Should I put a modern helmet on my vintage head? Or just get a new head?

I've heard the new models are very nice. Much thicker then the used to be.

Nothing I've seen here changes my opinion that they all look goofy and will cut off blood circulation and make you go bald.

I'm going to go bald anyway. A previous go cart wreck has left me with plenty of scars in my head as it is.

Somebody told me a long time ago that brains look a lot more dorky than a helmet. I'm gonna' stay with that idea.

I have a Bern Watts for winter sports and a Bern Baker for water sports (kiting). My bike helmet is a crappy old Giro MTB helmet with the visor ripped out. I want a new one! Having a hard time signing up with the Aero/spandex crowd. Helmets suck!
