The "vintage" seller crowd has discovered them though, The prices are twice to three times what they were 5 years ago even. There's a guy locally trying to sell an early 90's lime green Marin with a 60?mm Rock Shox fork for $800. Nice looking bike, but nobody is going to fall for that around here, especially not me.

,,,,BDMTB prices are still way below comparable road bike prices

I almost had a short book written here but it was getting boring and off topic. I am not sure if I consider my bikes a "collection" since all meant to be ridden, (if I can ever ride again) but some of them may be considered collectible. over the last year I just picked up a few 'always wanted' or grail bikes, a corregated frame (Cornelo) an original Volpe a TT or Funny bike (Bertoni), a Bianchi Ti Megatube, and few others that I just stumbled across because they were deal or seemed unique.
as for a direction my collection is headed... I think I am firmly, with a few exceptions, rooted in the Nuovo Classic period, '85ish to '95ish. I am not sure I need any more bikes (N+1 factor aside) but if I were to aquire another it would be, as other mentioned, quirky or unusual. I am only looking for a few bikes, but is a good deal comes along on a nice bike I may have to pick it up too.
did I amswer the question or did I just ramble for 10 or 15 minutes??

Not allowing the number to increase. Have been meaning to kick a couple projects out the door, but have been dreadfully slow about it.

Will it grow larger - or more sophisticated?
For anything other than a grail bike, space is an issue, so I need to make what I have better and more versatile.
Do you crave curly stays and chromed lugs?
Oh, yes.
Are you the apostle of some particular brand, with a house-full of old Schwinns?
Santa denied me a Schwinn ten speed when I was twelve, so my fate has been sealed since then. Need. More. Schwinns.
Are the bikes you're buying today getting progressively more expensive?
No, but I end up spending more money than I intended getting them to where I want them to be. I'm halfway through restoring my husband's Suburban and I can't wait to get started on a very neglected Super Le Tour.

Well, mine grew by two in the last week... The Fuji Ace is nearing completion (tonight maybe?) and just received the 1985 Allez
from jwarren. It looks in really good shape, and by the end of the weekend it should be sporting the excellent condition group
from the Trek 600 I got a few months ago. Now to find a white 85 Cannondale!! I have a red/white/blue thing stuck in my head. American brands regardless of country of origin or build. I have the blue Trek, now a red Allez, and just need a white C'dale to complete the group. After that I may be satisfied for a while. Or will I

I think I need just a few more...
I need a Raleigh International, Gran Sport or Competition in a 23" frame.
I need a French bike, maybe a Motobecane with 531 tubing.
I would like an older Italian racer to hang vintage Campy on.
I want a 650b with cushy tires.
I keep thinking I should sell the Davidson Impulse which at 55cm is a little small for me.
I should probably sell the Montagues to free up space.

I'm just starting out, so I'm looking to grow. Practicality is definitely a must because of space. If it's a different experience of riding, I'll entertain it, but multiples aren't on the radar.
Right now, I'm looking for three bikes:
- a nice lugged frame road bike.
- a "Mamachari" bike to restore/custom paint for my wife.
- a diamond frame townie bike for errands.
I'm pretty easy with the specs knowing that I can "upgrade" later.
