Behold the Wondrous Bicycle

Subtitle: Wrenching vs. Riding.

For on this the 24th day of July in the year 2011 my '73 Gran Sport carried me 57.7 miles. It is not a personal longest but it a longest this year because opportunities for recreational riding have been scarce.

Once the heat wave broke and the residual sprinkles from the colder air mass stopped this morning I was able to get out. While I was eating lunch the sky turned blue and the air dried out and the day became quite glorious.

Age of bike + age of rider + mileage = 157.7, and I'm reminded again that one reason we wrench them at all is so that we can ride them.

Behond? (ask a moderator they will correct your speeling)

Well I am not quite as spry in the mileage department and only rode to the grocery store and back, but given the temperatures and heat index...do we add anything over 100* in?

My total is 95, plenty of wrenching going on since I got the AC in the shop fixed

Thank you for the pic request but, well, you see, the bike has been goomed and unsaddled and led back to the stable, and I have have had a terrific bottle of India Brown Ale and so am not moving too fasr, I mean fast. In any case, it really isn't celebration-worthy. Just a good day on a bicycle!

Good on ya, Jim. I slept in this morning rather than do a fast 50 miler with the neighborhood boys. Ah, the lazy daze of summer!

Good job, Jim.

My score was 128 yesterday, and I'm just happy to have made it that far.

Nice job, Jim. Mine was 45 miles on my Gitane today at 90 degrees. My riding, on the road at least, has been scarce due to inclement weather. I have been on the mtb's a bunch so there's some fitness - just not to the level of last year. My total was 27 + 45 + 45 = 117 - was on my '84 Super Vitus Tour de France. It's quickly becoming the primary road bike.

Love the formula

139 yesterday. Shouldn't we also factor in the temperature number being we have such a heat factor this summer?

Let's see... 1981 Schwinn + 20 year old rider + 50 mile ride = 100! Yay nice round numbers!

I'll suggest a multiplier... every degree over 80 is worth .01. A temperature of 100 would then multiply your total by 1.20. Who has the highest number now? That changes my number to just 108.

Hmm, that's a hard thing to do because the temperature changes during the day and from place to place. Plus we have no easy way to know the temperature whereas I can read my distance off the computer. How hot was it along the route I took? I dunno'. In any case, humidity or dew point or "heat index" or Intellicast's "RealFeel" are probably more significant than pure temperature.

But I take your meaning. Riding when it's hot is harder.

Lol, I just did a ride that scored only 50 in a veritable deluge. 25 miles, so you can tell I wasn't on any of my old bikes

Our heat index maxed out at 114* today, I believe our "official" high was 99*, but I saw 103* on my PWS at the farm. And that was before the thunderstorms rolled through. Needed that .60" of rain badly. I usually try to get whatever riding I am going to do, done before 1000am.

I assume you mean 10:00AM, right?

Ideal riding temperature: 293degK. But of course my original point wasn't about temperature or distance, it was about the simple pleasure of riding!

That was supposed to be 1000 hrs
Hard to find much pleasure in riding in humidity like we have had recently, kind of like trying to breathe underwater...

But riding beats working any day if you can take it slow.
