just riding to work for the first time this year
Well I did it. The 5th of January, and already I’ve got 10.96 miles on the old bicycle. Yes it was 22 degrees F, but what the heck; we’re having a heat wave. At least it warmed up from last night. Then it was only 16, but some warm air is coming up from the south, so I guess tomorrow we’ll get snow. But it is the first ride of the New Year and therefore should be celebrated. Last year (2009) I only rode 1260 miles for the whole year. Yea, I know it aint much, but with a full time job, three kids and a wife, I'm happy. Most of those miles are from riding to work and back as many days as I could. At least when I have to ride due to the falling crashing and burning economy, thanks in large part to the fools in and around Washington DC, I won’t go into culture shock. Unless its from the thousands of other people that will be riding down MY bike path. Oh well, onward and upward.

I also did my first bike commute of the year today. I could have yesterday, but I woke up late (which was probably aided by the cold temps and my warm feather comforter). Anyway, I rode today. My old commute was a little over 7 miles each way; today was 17 miles each way. A little chilly in the morning at 30 degrees but that was mitigated by a slight tailwind.
The ride home was a little tougher. It was in the mid-40s but into the wind this time and I haven't been riding this much recently. I overdid it on my wonky knee and it was a little sore when I got home.

I did my first commute since before 1985 on Monday. Broke my rear wheel on the way home, so the bike's been out of commission since and won't be on the road again until next week.

Congratulations to all on your first commutes of the new year! I hope you keep it up. Treat yourselves to some nice warm or waterproof clothing, or new bike light for all the gas money you're not spending. If you're going to commute by bike, you deserve to do it comfortably. Enjoy the ride!
