freehub size?
Is there a difference between various brands of freehubs as far as the size or number of splines or width of the body? Also, what about the number cogs? Can a 7 speed hub also accept 8 or 9 speeds? I'm asking because I picked up a set of wheels at a garage sale, but the hubs have no markings except for "Road" painted on the hub body and "novatec" on the quick release lever. I did find a Novatec website, but no helpful information. The rims are Alex DA16 32 spoke semi aero profile.

yes there are enough difference to drive you crazy
Shimano for starters, has 6spd (and I believe 2 of them one real cheap that did not last long and then a uniglide model) 7 spd Uniglide {twist tooth**(UG) and Hyperglide (HG) some 7spd hubs only accept UG some both. then there is 8spd and again I believe the earlist 8spd had UG and then HG so there are different bodies for those. an 8spd HG will accept 8,9 10. I also think there was a differnt spline profile/count somewhere in the 6 to 7spd transition but it may have beena dura ace thing
Campagnolo also had 7 and then 8spd I don't believe these were interchangable, then 9 then 10 and finally 11. like a shimano 8spd will fit onto 9 and 10 bodies (maybe 11 too) but there were 2 different 8spd spline profiles
on both of these you can sometimes use a smaller cassette on a larger freehub body ie a 7spd HG cassette on 9spd body but you need a spacer behind it.
get a big cup of coffee and danish and have a look here. https://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html this guy (some call him a bike god) amassed a huge amount of information and luckily for us he actually recorded it.
also this is a good resource, https://velobase.com/ I had trouble navigating this site at first. run the coursor over 'components' in the upper left then click brand directory
you can't put a shimano cassette on a Campi freehub and vice versa. some companies make spacer kits so you can respace shimano cassettes on shimano hubs to work with Campi index
spend some time over on Velobase and you can the hubs and cassette. Sheldon brown has lots of good information on this also

It would surprise me if a "re-branded" hub or freehub was anything but Shimano. They're the big dog in this technology. Shimano has made one length Hyperglide freehub body for 7-speed (126 mm OLD spacing) and another for 8-9 (130). Sheldon's page referenced above has a section on "8 Of 9 On 7" for using narrow-spaced cassette parts on a normal-spaced freehub. If you wish to transplant another freehub onto a hub you have, be aware that Shimano has had at least 7 (I may exaggerate, then again, I may underestimate) different combinations of right-side seal and cone, so you might have to replace the right cone/washer/locknut too. Wheels Mfg can be a source here, but wasn't for me when trying to put a 7-speed freehub body on an older Shimano hub that had something else originally.

Thanks, I forgot to check Sheldon's site. It looks like a Shimano Hyperglide, but I'm not sure if it is 7, 8, or 9 speed. Is there a way to measure this from the width of the body? I think it is 130 mm OLD, but I'll try it in one of my bikes to tell for sure.
