Grandis Frame Set - Model & Age???

I can't remember when I got this old Grandis frame and fork set, but I do have it. I paid little attention to it until recently, when another person became interested in possible purchase.

As I checked the frame set over, I realized it is probably older than I would have guessed. There is a bicycle sporting an identical frame set on Classic Rendezvous and it is listed as 1975 vintage.

My frame has 120mm drop space, and a Columbus Repainted Decal. I am pretty sure that the tube set is Columbus Special (rings like a bell) and the drops are, of course, Campagnolo, although the milling on the rears has obliterated the Campy name.

Any ideas as to the age and model of this lovely old frame set? Thanks.

Grandis didn't make a ton of different models, especially in the 70's. I would say mid-70's sounds right, given the frame details. It has the G's in the side of the headlugs like the one on CR, but the three-pronged Grandis thingy on the fork crown like this earlier Super Leggera:

Yours has a crown more like the earlier bike - which also has those trick top tube braze-on cable guides.

This Super Leggera is clearly later:

I'm assuming yours has the curved brake bridge, though the photos don't show. I'd guess circa 1974-5. Probably a top model - i.e. "Special" - built with SL, but without the degree of detail given to the Super Leggera.

1975 seems reasonable to me; with the cable guides in the bottom bracket and the flat crown fork.

I'd repaint it with the lugs highlighted in a second color, they look very nice.

Actually, I offered the frame set to a friend's friend, if his friend is interested.

Today is my day off and I am going to build the bicycle up, or at least play at building it up. I do have three loads of old bicycles to transport to the Bicycles for Humanity storage facility. Which I had better get at right now.

Anyway, it just so happens that I have a period correct Campagnolo Super Record group, complete with first generation rear derailleur. Might as well install the group and have a grand ride sometime soon - unless the frame set sells, of course.

Now that would be something!

It's a very cool and relatively rare frame.

Thanks for sharing the pics. I do note that the fork crown on yours is different from the OP's - yours is similar to the red on Randy linked to on CR. Randy - does your frame have braze-on shifter mounts or not? Some differences in the details doesn't surprise me, given that Grandis was a relatively small shop and probably wasn't making cut-and-dried model changes from year to year.

Yes, there are braze-on shifter mounts, which I found a bit of a surprise, also, considering what the rest of the frame set looks like. The shifter mounts look to be original, though.

Still waiting to see if I am going to keep the frame set or not. The potential buyer has not made a decision, yet. Either way, though, the bicycle will be built up and ridden once again.

Agree it's a bit of a surprise, but plausible, as they were available, I believe - just not in wide use. The fact that Chuckk's purple bike has them makes it likely they weren't added with the repaint (especially since top tube cable guides weren't added as well). Grandis was doing one-at-a-time work, it appears - those cool cable guides on the red-silver Super Legerra tell me he was not averse to unusual touches. As I said, it's a cool frame.

Detail Photos Here

Send photos and the serial number to Grandis, they're helpful.

Silvino personally built all the frames on these older bikes.

That's quite a pile! The Ellis-Briggs looks cool (as do lots of others). That is where Doug Fattic apprenticed, fwiw....
