Hide the wimmen and childrun. I just bought me another Arnmann.
Yep, another grey '86 with 6208, looks like it's had less than 100 miles put on it since new.

Not mine , although I would not mind owning it . Nice price , I'm not sure if the disfigurement is permanent . Looks like the rack is just clamped on . Someone buy it and rescue this IM from dorkdom .

Here is another dorkized IM , what is wrong with people ?

Forgot this thread was here.
This followed me home today for some odd reason. A 1987 Expert with what appears to be all the original components. I just spent all the time during the MLS Cup game cleaning and removing as much grime as i could. Functionally it seems to all be working ok. It's actually not looking too bad. Ran out of the cleaning wipes I was using but almost got the extremely grimy hoods back to white. Glad for that. This one does have a fair amount of scrapes and such. I'll have to dig through the Ironman info thread to find what paint matches best.
This is a nice 30 year old bike but no where near as clean as the 89 I got from @texaspandj.
I'll get more pics up once I take them. This is how it looked when I picked it up.
And for the second bike purchase in a row I've gotten lucky with the fit. Once I set the saddle position on this the bar reach was spot on. Good stuff.
Best I can tell so far all parts are original down to the seatpost, the seatpost QR, and peddles. The saddle is not original nor the bar tape. Oh, and new tires with an extra tube. It didn't get out of the 20s today and tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same. But I may take this out as I've been wanting to see what all the Ironman hype is all about for years.
The Tange 1 label is coming off so I'll probably source another one of these. Now to get back to the research. Hopefully the 87 and 89 have different geometry or something so I can justify keeping both, LOL!

Looks good James . On my 86' IM , Krylon Short Cuts SCB-005 Red Pepper was a perfect match for the red and the Krylon Short Cuts white was good too . Sorry I don't have the part # for the white .

Funny that I just found this thread! I just logged into the forum after being offline for a year or two. I just finished an Iron man the other day as something to do since I had sold my other bikes! I just dished the wheel it had, threw on a ss freewheel and some other spare parts and have been riding it around. Unfortunately it's quite tall for me (for $20 I couldn't pass it up), so it's currently for sale as I search for something else. It's too bad, as I love this paint scheme!
Just shows you can do anything to an Ironman and it just keeps right on trucking.

you'll be hard pressed to find any Ironman in the condition of your 89 "smoke on the water" expert Ironman. But the ride is what counts. Those original first generation 105 components and a frame geometry that begs to be ridden hard has made the Ironman a real sleeper as you'll soon discover.
Be forewarned, although 30 years is vintage/old for a bike, your Ironman is in better shape than you and will trick you into going harder than you're capable of somedays.
Have fun and enjoy.

Nice score. Those first year experts are really cool. Looks mostly original, However the QR seat bolt is not.

I think I have pretty much all parts in hand now for the beautiful one I got from you. I'm just debating using either the used tubular wheels I picked up or a new set of Campagnolo Scirocco's . I'm thinking the black and silver rims of the Scirocco's (labels removed) will compliment the frame and Chrous 10 speed groupset the best.
I've got to mock this up to dial in the fit and which stem to use and then just wait until Christmas is paid off to build it up.

New gray '86 Ironman arrived today, hope to get pics posted tomorrow.
It's a pretty amazing time capsule. Bet this thing hasn't seen 100 miles in its whole life.

...is this getting tricolor group with down tube shifters and Non aero brake levers?
Probably not. It's so original and pristine I may just do a bearing service and put on a new chain, 13-28 freewheel, and older Deore-based 50/34 compact.
Not a huge fan of the Dia Compe GC brake levers (although they are bronze finish to match the group and have excellent hoods) and may swap those out for either 6207 non-aero levers with black hoods, or Tektro R200's.
In the long term, I have a ten speed indexing unit that will fit into the 6208 shift levers and a brand new set of Ultegra 10 speed hubs laced to Open Elite rims, so it could evolve into a 10 speed down tube shifted retro-mod at some point. And it will take 28's, so with an 11-34 cassette it could take a future trip out West to L'Eroica (not in 2018, that's reserved for the Pelizzoli), or to L'Eroica in Gaiole in 2019. I suspect a Centurion at Gaiole would be pretty unusual.

Great rescue. I managed to see one of those in person, owned by the guy who sold me my first Ironman Carbon. They're alike in the idea of carbon tubes and alloy lugs, and then, side by side, you really start to notice the difference.

I'm checking out this 1985 (?) this weekend hopefully. Thoughts on price? only the one pic. Seller asking $245. Looks like the rear derailleur could be a replacement.
Thanks!
Thanks!

RD looks to be an original 6207 but with replacement pulley wheels. That's a friction only group, using down tube mounts that must be modified if you want to fit anything indexed or a more modern group with STI's and cable stops. Hoods look to be missing but Cane Creek/Dia Compe units will fit acceptably. Bar wrap looks original, seat is not. Cable housing looks to have been replaced at some point but hard to tell without a closer look.
85's have some interesting features not found on later IM's, such as easy clearance for 28's (or maybe larger), hand painted lug lining, nice fork crown and polished seat stay caps. And the 6207 group is totally solid if you're OK with friction- I even had a Tiagra hub laced to the original rim out back and shifted 10 speeds with it.

for the Denver market $245 i think is a little high. i picked up a couple IM's from Denver area and the most i spent was for a 1987 Master in dirty but rideable condition for $200
